Paul, the Cosmic ray detector,  detects Muons, think of them as a heavy electrons. When a cosmic ray hits the atmosphere, it comes apart in a number of sub atomic particles.  The dectecor is made up of a coincidence detector. Which is 2 Geiger counters stacked on top of each with sheets of lead above and between the Geiger counters. The output feeds an AND circuit, when both detectors fire at the same time it's a muon.  The output of the AND circuit is fed into SkyPipe.

Is it a commercial product or a build-it-yourself?

I have used a detector with scintillators, stacked as a coincidence detector.
