Hi Anthony, 

I subscribe to Reflector magazine - Alex Petit [sp?] had an article published in it; that was what drew me to it. . 

I would call the mag ’student and educator-oriented’ (little kids through high school/college?) and they give a lot of recognition awards, which is commendable, if not interesting to me. 

However, they publish interesting articles. That’s my 2 cents worth. Worth twice what you paid for it.

Also, you don’t have to subscribe to the magazine to read it. I get it because my son likes hard copy.

Anthony et all: came across this post from a long time back.

The astro league has lots of 'hands on' astronomy observing programs
and awards
that encourage its members to actively participate in some facet of
observational astronomy.

Each program has several levels of achievement.
Often he 1st level can often be achieved in just a few weeks, the
higher levels often take
months to years to achieve.

You submit logs of your prescribed activities to a league Program
Coordinator which are then reviewed and if found
worthy, you are awarded a pdf/paper certificate and possibly a very
nice ~1" tall pin for your achievements.

Many astronomy clubs have membership in the league bundled in with
their own membership.

I have achieved a few awards myself.

Astro League members also get a quarterly magazine, 'The Reflector',
that cites award recipients and articles on topical astronomy topics.
The league also hosts a yearly conference.
