Hi Guys,

I put this handy guide together for nearby galaxies in order of brightness (in the 21 cm range). There are several handy reference spectral profiles from various professional and amateur sources.

There are several columns there that I’m unclear what they are:  Kam, Chin, Caringan and Foster, for example.. and the several columns following that.  What are these?

They are the peak amplitudes from specific professional survey papers (cited on the last page). They are the authors of the papers cited.

The last two columns in the main table are amplitudes from my own Skynet 20 Meter Dish Observations and Simulated Drift Scans using the LAB Survey Database.

To the right of that are averages of like groupings of amplitudes from the various surveys followed by an overall average ratio comparison to m31.

The idea is to give everyone a decent estimate of how small the signal should be as compared to m31.

For those who are considering extra galactic,  your articles and spreadsheet templates are available on the SARA  https://radio-astronomy.org/node/198      website.  It takes a bit to understand where to input the parameters.

Additional columns that would be handy are the velocity or frequency  of the peaks and the bandwidth needed to see them both.  Not all of us have the airspy mini.

Very interesting,  might be a future goal.

I need to update the articles and spreadsheet templates since I've modified them significantly since 2024.
As far as the position of peaks and bandwidth requirements for each spectrum, I'll have to think on that. They aren't always clean peaks. But some idea of where the "ends" of the spectrum are would be helpful. In the new guide, I tried to include graphics of the relevant spectral plots for reference. This is definitely and on-going effort!
