Hello,

I tried out DictTango, an android dictionary app that works with MDict (.mdx) dictionaries. It seems to be superior to GoldenDict. It loads 200+ dictionaries smoothly, has full text search support with regex, ability to group dictionaries together, LLM access and more. I've been looking for something like this for a long time now.

I converted the dictionaries on indic-dict to .mdx. You can download them here if you want to try out DictTango. I used this script for the conversion (It's not very intuitive). Use the nice guide here on setting DictTango up.

 

There is not much documentation online about MDict (mostly on Chinese forums), but it seems to use HTML for structure and CSS for design. 

@Vishvas Vasuki You could consider making MDict available on indic-dict along with Stardict?

Thanks for sharing. I was able to install it (tip for others: extract the zip file into a known location, maybe using some file-explorer-like program, so that it's easier to find the extracted .mdx files from the app).

Could you say more about what you mean by LLM access? What does it do / what kinds of things do you find it useful for?

(Somehow I find myself preferring using the web on my laptop (example http://kosha.sanskrit.today/ or https://ambuda.org/tools/dictionaries/) even when GoldenDict is installed on my phone, so I'll be interested to see whether this DictTango app will change that. BTW for indic-dict / Stardict Dictionary Updater, it may also be useful to have a webpage listing all the dictionaries with a line or two of information about them. That could link to the stardict and/or .mdx files for each of them, for anyone who wants to install individual files manually.)

I have filed https://github.com/indic-dict/dict-curation/issues/1 and https://github.com/indic-dict/stardict-dictionary-updater/issues/39  in case some user wants to accomplish it.

You can submit the dictionary entry you're seeing to an LLM along with a pre-defined prompt. For instance, you may not know German and want to consult the St. Petersburg dict in English (see below).

(Separately, now I'm wondering whether the dicts can be set up with pre-chosen groups, i.e. someone downloading the .mdx files won't have to manually group them… probably not.)
