Hi friends,

I got tapped to serve on the GODORT local arrangements committee for ALA 2024, and I thought this was a good hive mind to tap for ideas of locations for the reception. Ideally, this would be somewhere downtown, within walking distance from the convention center. A really great place not far from a blue line trolley stop might be a good option, too.

The San Diego Public Library already came up, but it looks like it’s pretty pricey, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s already booked. Azalea – do you have any insights on this?

I’ve just emailed UCSD Park & Market for pricing.

Judith, have you come across any downtown breweries with good reception/event space?

And Mike and Kelly – as past treasurer and member of the Awards Committee, do you have insight on the reception (and why there doesn’t seem to be any sponsors any more)?

Thanks for any ideas you all might have!

Annelise

Hi,
At a past Midwinter we used a bar adjacent to Petco Park. Sadly, I've forgotten the name.
And yes, SDPL will be pricey as the Library views their spaces as money makers.

Hi Annelise and everyone!

Due to the high rents near the convention center and the need for lots of space for actual brewing, most of the 'breweries' near the Center are small tap rooms and pretty cramped. I don't know how big the group might be since it has been a long time for me at ALA, but some taprooms might be amenable to closing to the public for the reception if they don't have a separate space. Something else to think about is the reception food. Some places have agreements with local food trucks which you might be able to piggyback on as very few will have kitchens. You might be able to schedule a tour of the brewing space if they are an on-site brewery. I have noted where cocktails are available for those who do not want beer. Most places also have non-alcoholic choices besides water as well.

That said, here is the list of the ones that might be possible with some comments. I have sorted by approximate distance from the CC based on driving. Walking distance could easily be shorter since the streets around the CC are wonky for cars. If driving isn't an issue (use the trolley, etc.) that could expand options.

Approximately 1 mile:

Bay City Brewing 627 8th Ave. I haven't been to the East Village location. It does have a rooftop bar with cocktails, a kitchen, and can book private events. https://baycitybrewingco.com/visit/tasting-room/

East Village Brewing 201 Park. Nice large space with additional outside seating, but no separate event space or kitchen that I know of. I believe they are also offer wine now. https://eastvillagebrew.com/

Half Door Brewing 903 Island. Event space (upstairs), but I haven't been in it. Kitchen and cocktails as well. http://www.halfdoorbrewing.com/

Mission Brewery 13114th St. The last time I was there, the neighborhood was sketchy but they are set up for events. Do not remember a kitchen, but the business has changed hands and might have added one. https://missionbrewery.com/. [I have a quibble with them as they keep saying they have been around since 1913. The name was used by a brewery 1913-1917 but not the same people or beer and not located in the Mission Brewery building everyone sees from the 5. People frequently go to the historic building by mistake. There is a brewery planning to go in the Mission Brewing building, but I don't know when it will actually open.]

WestBrew 701 Island Ave. Wine and kitchen. Haven't been to this location yet but the Vista location is nice. https://westbrew.com/downtown

Between 1 and 2 miles:

Lost Abbey (The Church) 341 J St at 13th. I have been there and it is a very cool renovated small church. Don't know about food or event capability. https://lostabbey.com/locations/the-church/

Approximately 2-2.5 miles (Columbia/Little Italy) so I don't see anyone walking there in the evening:

Ballast Point Brewing 2215 India St.  They have outside spaces available for events and kitchen. I believe this is beer only. https://ballastpoint.com/location/littleitaly/

Burgeon Beer 1326 Kettner. Space is rather small with other alcohol options as well as kitchen. https://burgeonbeer.com/pages/the-arbor

Karl Strauss 1157 Columbia St. Original KS brewpub with food and cocktails. https://www.karlstrauss.com/visit/downtown-san-diego/

Stone Brewing 1202 Kettner. This is a tap room with a nice large outdoor space but no kitchen. Basically next door to the train depot and trolley. https://www.stonebrewing.com/visit/outposts/kettner

Thr3e Punk Ales 2021 India St. Just opened so I haven't gotten there yet and not really any info to share on the site. Their Chula Vista location is frequently jammed with no private event space. https://3punkales.com/

Places that fall within the range but I wouldn't vote for (not that you asked)

Knotty Brewing 842 Market St. Not sure the space would be large enough as I haven't ever been there when they were open. Has a kitchen. https://knottybrewing.com/

Little Miss Brewing 545 Park. Haven't been to this location, but the decor in the ones I have been to is always a bit unfinished and the spaces are small. No food that I am aware of. https://littlemissbrewing.com/

Resident Brewing 1065 4th St. (located in the Local.) Have never been there so don't know what is available but hear it is small. https://residentbrewing.com/

Owl Drug Company (with Artisanal Brewers inside) 602 Broadway. Temporarily closed and I wouldn't count on them being open anytime soon.

Hope this helps,

Judith

The San Diego Law Library is located downtown. In the past, they've hosted receptions for law library-related events. They might be open to doing so during ALA.
