Dear Group,
I came across a document (Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulasidas) which has beautiful sanskrit shlokas at the beginning of each chapter.

The document uses chanakyabold font.(I happen to have chanakya font in my pc, but this does not show the characters from this document)

Is this font downloadable? Does one have to pay for this?

I tried the net but was not successful.

I shall be grateful for help in getting this font.

Thanks

Satyajit

Actually Chanakya fonts are copyrighted fonts and comes with an
software (Sorry don't remember the name but it was something like
indic, a company from Noida, Delhi) and people use walkman chanakya
instead of it (an open type alternative) mediafire link is
http://www.mediafire.com/?mimdmdms3zx (Sorry not uploaded by me, but
just did a google search) and if you want chanakya then I've uploaded
for you on mediafire (contains Normal, Bold, Bold Italic, Italics)

Chanakya font can't be typed independently without a software. The tool is 4C Lipika which you have to buy and it is based on old Remington typewriter layout.

There is a free software made by me to type in Chanakya and Krutidev fonts with InScript, the standard keyboard layout of Devanagari. Walkman-Chanakya font support will be added in next version.

Ravi,
how are you converting this, are you using MS word or LaTeX?
Can you tell me whats the program did you use to create this document?.
If you have the .pdf and you are trying to change the font  then i have to say you are out of luck.

First you have to extract the text from PDF file. There are many pdf to word/text converters available on internet.

Then you have to convert the Chanakya/Walkman-Chanakya font text to Unicode using a converter.

Your pdf file contains text in multiple fonts like Chanakya, Walkman-Chanakya901, Walkman-Chanakya905 etc

For Chanakya font, use this converter:

For Walkman-Chanakya901, use this and for Walkman-Chanakya905 use this. (Run after downloading HTML files).

I have 140 pages of Samskrut - Samskrut-English dictionary, typed using a customised software. The pages are saved as JPG and PDF files. Could someone help me convert it into any editable format, so that I can enter the corrections? As it is bilingual, I could not get any help locally. I was told to get it retyped, using Walkman Chanukya. If so, how do I go about it?

Can you send me one page (or the whole document) in PDF? I will like to try to convert it into Unicode Devanagari text.

I think your problem is a bit difficult but solvable. It is difficul because it has Sanskrit in legacy text (Walkman Chanakya etc) and English MIXED. Mixing is the main problem here because if you extract text from the pdf file and convert it to Unicode, the english words will also be converted (which should not).

Still there is a way out. This may be this-

(1) Convert the PDF file into DOC file using some PDF to DOC converter (among others, Nitro PDF could be used for this.)

(2) Open the DOC file in MS Office or OpenOffice writer. Select the font (Walkman Chanakya here). Convert the selected font using font conversion macro. This macro has be be written if not available.

Pushparaj, you have not said anything about size of your file and whether it is a text file, a doc file or some other file. But still, I would suggest you to change its font (encoding) to unicode. You may get a 'font converter' for this job easily. Once it is in unicode, you will have freedom to choose a unicode font, hundreds of which are available.
