Dear list members,
In the 108 names of Ganesha on the sanskrit documents site:

There are a few names whose meaning I'm not clear about.

 28 ढुण्ढये

37 विधेर्जाय [वैरिञ्ज्याय]

50. दितैजाय

Any insights into the meaning of these 3 names would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Harry Spier

ढुण्ढिढुंढिः An epithet of Gaṇeśa.
वैरिञ्चवैरिञ्च mf(ई)n. (fr. वि-रिञ्च) relating or belonging to Brahmā ( who is also referred as विरिञ्चि in some slokas like Soundarya lahiri)
And in 50 it is ॐ दितौजाय नमः॥,  I am sorry, I am not able to find this.

Thanks and regards.
Vijay R.S.

DhuNDhih occurs twice in the stotra.

In the body of the stotra:

dvandvArisindhau sthirabhAvakArin vadantamevaM tyajata prabhItAH || 38||

In phalashruti:

That seems to be a different document than the one referred to by Sri Harry ji.

Thank you Vijay for these 3 definitions. And Nagaraj you are correct, its the 108 names of Ganesha I'm looking at now, not the stotra referenced earlier that also had DhuNDhi in it.
Thanks,

The source of explanation of ढुण्ढिः is Kalpadruma.

2. Again, Kalpadruma gives the explanation of  गुहः as - पुं, (गूहति रक्षति पालयतीत्यर्थः देवसेनाम् । Protector of the army of Devas.

This may not help to get the etymology of dhundhi but may help to understand the significance of the version of Ganesha :

http://pawanpath.up.gov.in/dhundhiraj-vinayak/

According to a story mentioned in Kashi Khand, Dhundhiraj Vinayak form of Shri Ganesha is the part of Ashta Pradhan Vinayak Yatra. According to story mentioned in Ashta Pradhan Yatra, when Lord Ganesha succeeded in finding the deficiency in the rule of King Divodas, he settled down in Varanasi in the form of fifty six idols (Chhapan Vinayak). Thereafter, Lord Vishnu dethroned King Divodas as per the vow. Lord Vishwanath arrived Kashi from Mandarachal along with all the Gods. As soon as Lord Vishweshwar stepped in Kashi he firstly worshipped and praised the Gadnayak (Lord Ganesha) and chanted the hymns of Dhundhiraj and proclaimed that at this place Lord Ganesha will be known as Dhundhiraj and pilgrims who will offer prayers to Dhundhiraj prior to the Lord Vishweshwar will be graced by the blessings of Lord Vishweshwar. It is believed that reverents who regularly offer prayers to Dhundhiraj Vinayak get rid of all the sins and attains salvation.

Thank you Nagaraj ,
1. Because the name ढुण्ढिः was rare in both the GRETIL and Muktabodha  digital libraries I had thought ढुण्ढिः (and ढुण्ढिराजाwere obscure/unimportant names of Ganesha, but from the detailed information you've provided, confirmed in less detail in  Paul Courtney's Ganesha Lord of Obstacles Lord of Beginnings pages 143 - 145 ,
Ḍhuṇḍhi is an important form of lord Ganesha related to Kashi.

2. Also I'm wondering if the following are misspellings of  ढुण्ढि.  or alternate spellings?
Note both the Muktabodha and GRETIL digital libraries only have the spelling ढुण्ढि .
In the following references, there is a lot of alternation between , , and
a) In Paul Courtney's book the name is spelled  ḍhuṇḍirājā, and ḍhuṇḍi.
b) A previous posting to the list said: The Kashi Vishwanath Suprabhatam contains the worधुण्डि twice,
c) In the Mudgala Purana section being discussed on the list, in verse 5 it is spelled दुंढि .

[Note: Ḍhuṇḍhi Vināyaka alias Ḍhuṇḍhirāja has a prime position at the centre of Kāśī. He is to be worshipped by pilgrims on entrance to Kāśī. His name is derived from ḍhuḍh—‘to search, to find’ (v 33 in this chapter)Śiva got entrance into Kāśī through his machinations. Hence this name.

A  chapter in स्कन्दपुराण  gives the locations of the fifty-six Vināyakas at Kāśī. These Vināyakas are arrayed at the eight directional points in seven concentric circles centring around Ḍhuṇḍhirāja near the Viśvanātha Temple, as follows: (See vv 59-114).
