Dear friends,

Some time ago, I advertised that we sell 'Teach Yourself Sanskrit' and met with an overwhelming response! Thanks very much. It is edifying indeed to be appreciated for what I do.

The set I had advertised is as under:

संस्कृत स्वाध्यायः

for those who wish to study Sanskrit on their own

Set of 14 books

2013     22 x 14 cm     4270 pages

Rs.  1610 for the set

http://www.navelgazing.net/2013/11/sanskrit-svadhyaya-teach-yourself.html

This set contains 14 books, demarcated into four levels.

Level 1 : Set of 5 books for Rs. 200 (914 pages)

Level 2:

When are you going to reprint Level 2 (approximately)? I think that majority wants to have complete sets of books (levels).

Now, unfortunately, Level 2 is out of print. I ask you this question. Would you still be interested in buying the set - without level 2 - or would you prefer to wait till all four levels are available at once.

Sir;

I also have the same question.  Can I buy the whole set in any city in India?  Or can I send money to purchase it?  Where to send and in what mode?  How long it will take the book-set to be in my hands?  Thank you kindly.

Warm regards.

In Internet age, Why buy Sanskrit books when you can learn using on line resources?
Sanskrit is taught in a  complex script allover in Indian schools and colleges but how many Sanskrit graduates are fluent in Sanskrit? Will these graduates be able to find jobs as  priests or teachers? Look at most Indian Gurus who chant in Sanskrit but communicate in English Why?
Most of Sanskrit knowledge have already been translated  and available in various languages.

The same question about learning Sanskrit Grammar online or offline.
There are so many form generators to know the forms and dictionaries
to know the meanings. and So many grammar books in different languages
online and offline for easy reference.

It is computation Sanskrit age and why people are learning grammar in
schools instead of teaching Computational Sanskrit?

It is not easy to change the system deep rooted for ages. That is the answer.

Mr. Ken P,
Our best wishes to you.   Sanskrit books are still necessary even though the computers are available with internet connectivity with all the literature in Sanskrit because there are are good lot of people illiterate on computer but yet good in Samskrit and other local languages.

2. After our Independence Samskrit is relagated to the last position giving preference to English and local languages and hence people studied or studying English and local language generally for earning livelihood or for higher studies.   Thus it became scarce studying Samskrit in our land.   Only a few people take up Samskrit to study having interest in its literature.
Thus very few people who studied Samskrit are proficient in it but very few are there who can understand it  when they speak.   That is the reason they (the Swamys etc)  turn to English or local language to speak/explain  about  the contents of the Samskrit books.

My simple comment is Language Set up has to be installed in mind
itself, and then one can speak a language which he has learnt from
books. Otherwise it is the same condition for any language, other than
one's mother tounge. It needs special effort for speaking, as in the
case of foreign languages, in the case of Sanskrit also, Spoken
Sanskrit is the movement in this direction. No book is necessary, only
training to speak is the need of the time, as other sources are
available online and offline.

Why buy Sanskrit books when you can learn using on line resources?
-- because structure helps, at least to me.

Sanskrit is taught in a  complex script allover in Indian schools
-- I beg to differ. The script is one of the most important features of the language. Compared to English, where same letters can be pronounced in different ways (like ough in tough, trough, through, thorough), Samskrit is phoenetic. Means less arbitrary rules to remember by rote, imho.

Look at most Indian Gurus who chant in Sanskrit but communicate in English Why?
-- Depends who the target audience is. Not many communicate in english afaik.

Most of Sanskrit knowledge have already been translated  and available in various languages.
-- Nope. Translation in general to another language loses its essence and mars its beauty. Like watching films solely through subtitles.

Furthermore, translation to an inferior language ( where there are not enough words to describe deep concepts) is a lossy translation. We have works of literature in Sanskrit where there are multiple layers of meanings, beautiful and artistic structural formulations and specific intonations. IMHO, to "read it in translations" is like *reading* Mozart's music notes on paper - lossy, and misrepresented. But why go there when we can easily learn the language (given that we have learned English - a foreign language, this should not be too hard). Why lean on crutches instead of enjoying and appreciating the original. :)

CVK,

Well, if you can master Sanskrit in the same years  the way you did English go for it but watch your wallet. Nowadays  the schools and book publishers are in the business of making money.
Why not contact recent Sanskrit college graduates and test their knowledge ?

Every city in India and all important cities in the world, has branches of Samskrita Bharati, an organisation devoted to Samskritam.   You may browse on the internet or enquire  somebody in your city.   With them you can have the wanted books.

I see there is a great interest in self-study books to learn Sanskrit. Each and every book has its utility and depending on an individual's way of learning one book might help more than the other. Please try whatever meets your needs best and consider the following.

In my experience the best books that I have found to learn Sanskrit are:
सरलसंस्कृतसरणिः, प्रथमो भागः, द्वितियोऽन्तिमश्च भागः, जगन्नाथो वेदालङ्कारः डॉ॰ नरेन्द्रः च, संस्कृतकार्यालयः श्रीअरविन्दाश्रमः पुदुच्चेरी २००३ (http://sabda.sriaurobindoashram.org)

They are comprehensive and cover entire language in two small volumes and use a very effective method of teaching by getting the learner to make hundreds of sentences using templates. The examples of word and dhaatu usage are culled from the rich Sanskrit literature. It covers most dhaatus with all lakaars, active and passive forms, subanta forms, kRRita pratyayaaH, sandhi rules, and helps develop a rich vocabulary.

Please look at the SABDA site, they have many more books on learning Sanskrit. There ordering and delivery process is fast and perfect. The prices are very reasonable and you will be surprised how much you can learn from those books.

Please note that I have no direct connection with SABDA. I have used their books and I am certain that many learners can benefit from those books as I have.

Thanks.
