Dear Products group,

In Chennai we are trying to provide a top up multi cable charging device for power wheelchair users at the beach access path. (Was originally supposed to be a solar powered shaded stand and inspired by a similar mobile multi cable charging point)

Am aware there's a multitude of charging cables and batteries, but if we could select 3-4 - like Neomotion's, Alimco standard and other Govt distributed models like Ostrich in Tamil Nadu, we could ensure emergency charging.

This could be provided in transport terminals and electric vehicle charging stations by default.

Can we not come up with something homegrown?

Hi Vaishnavi,

Thank you for sharing this.
I believe a Lithium-ion battery would take 4 - 6 hours or more to fully charge. Some such standardised wheelchair charging stations (mobile/on demand) at airport lounges would benefit greatly - charging while one waits.

It will be good to guage how much time would an emergency charging take. If it takes too long (over an hour or so), then the solution needs a rethink. Something on the lines of an attach/detach  swappable battery (govt provided) need to be thought of.

Regards,
Arun

Hey Arun,

The second link I'd provided addressed this emergency charge aspect :

”The charging stations have two different outlets for the different types of chairs, explained Clay. The stations provide what's called a fast charge, meaning the rider will have enough of a charge to hopefully get them home, but not a full charge, said Rachel Anderson, accessibility modification coordinator at Access to Independence.

A chair is usually charged overnight to ensure the battery is fully charged, she explained."

Wonderful initiative, even though it may be rarely used- it creates lot of visibility to disability
