CYCSA Moorings

Hi Fellow Mariners,

The CYCSA has been approached by a company from Yorke Peninsula with a proposal to maintain our moorings across the Gulf.

The moorings at Black Point are currently maintained by the Fishing Association.

The moorings at Stansbury and Edithburgh have not been maintained for a number of years.

Before we make any decisions on this proposal, we would like to get a feel for how often these moorings are used by our club members.

Could you let me know your thoughts before Christmas either through this forum or give me a call on 0411 101 875(m).

Thanks Adrian. We use all of these moorings each year. Probably the ones at Edithburgh (perhaps 4-6 times) more than the others (2-3 times). I agree having them well maintained is essential. 

It would also be interesting to check their locations. One at Edithburgh moved last year & is now very close (too close) to one of the other moorings.... and if I remember the ones at Black Point are not in much water at low tide (the Royal ones are deeper).

With some new “cruisers” in our group (Terriki & Far Star) I am sure these moorings will get a greater work out this summer.

As with the Eastern States the vessel registration fees paid to the relevant Government Department go towards providing and maintaining mooring facilities for all to use.

 

It is about time pressure from the CYCSA and RSAYS lodge a concerted effort in getting the same here in S.A. as we pay some of the highest fees for Registration in the country with NO gain from our outlay.

 

Giving a contract to an independent company would incur additional cost to the cruising members of both clubs.

Hi Mark,

I agree this is something the Club should pursue on our behalf. Your point is well made. Whilst Club members use these moorings others enjoy having these safe anchorages as well. 

Regardless of who pays for it though, it is essential that the mooring are in good condition, that the people using them can rely on a safe mooring and there is a regular maintenance program to ensure they are reliable.

I agree Mark.  NSW and QLD mooring program is fantastic.  It is also a safety issue in times of bad weather.

But then again registrations are calculated by length of boat... So yachties don't pay much in context 🤣🤣🤣

Hi Adrian and fellow cruisers

Firstly yes fully agree we should have state owned and maintained moorings like the east coast.  Sadly with the current COVID and gst short falls the state will likely be completely disinterested in biting off a non essential multimillion dollar project for we few (justified or not).  Happy to lobby with you all though, don’t ask don’t get!

We use and enjoy the Edithburgh moorings a few times per season and black point perhaps one every couple of seasons (we usually leave these for power boats and just drop anchor.  We also use reciprocal RSAYS moorings in Vincent when they are not sought after by their members (with great thanks).  Most other places in the state we self sufficiently hang on hook.

Where we would love to see club moorings is in bay of shoals and in American river as bolt holes for the sometimes evil systems that can catch us out further from home.

On topic of safety and maintenance we always dive our moorings (usually CYCSA buoys) and would be more than happy to assist in major maintenance activities being trained scuba divers also.  The moorings need to be maintained irrespective of who does it, and there are obviously potential legal coverage risk to maintaining club moorings directly so we are supportive of either option since many of us are time poor!

Further to my correspondence re suggested mooring contract and the vessel registration fee being used to provide public moorings

 

Taking the number of marina berths available around South Australia region in RSAYS, CYCSA, Port Adelaide Sailing club, Holdfast Shores, Pt Vincent, Public Marina North Haven, Pt Lincoln and Wirrina with an estimated number of vessels berthed in the locations to be conservative at around 1000+.

Let’s say the average length of vessel to be 10 to11 metres given there are some smaller and larger.

 

Registration for this length of vessels is $407.00, 2020 yearly fees

 

1000 x $407 = $407 k per year

Over the last say 20 years = $8.14 million gathered in equivalent revenue in today’s money

This does not include hard stand vessels in CYCSA

I believe this to be a very conservative calculation

 

The Government has provided many boat ramps and facilities for towed vessels on the River Murray and sea shore locations over this period with registration fees gathered but to my knowledge nothing for deep keeled yachts or motor yachts

I believe we have a legitimate claim for revenue funded moorings

Just to outrage you all, my rego fees in 

Tassie is $81, regardless of length..

Oh and the government maintains a series of public moorings...

But... We don't have a nice pidgion in our Mall so I think you are still doing well. 🤣

Thanks Adrian for raising the moorings topic. 

Thank you also to those of you who have responded with such great comments so far. 

We have much to thank our Cruising and Fishing Associations members of the late 1990’s and the first decade of this century for, in regard to the moorings. 

During the 90’s a number of CYC and Squadron members laid and maintained their own moorings in Pt Vincent and generously made them available to others on request. A few other members laid moorings in places like Snug Cove, American River, Edithburgh, Stansbury and Black Point. They were similarly generous. 

About 20 years ago from memory, Ray Brown and the Fishing Association established the CYC moorings in Black Point and ensured they were maintained thereafter. I understand Ken Amos attended to them very recently. Thanks Ken and FA. 

At about the same time the CYC Cruising Association laid the moorings in Stansbury and for a number of years ensured they were regularly maintained. I was going to make a list here of all the volunteers who assisted during the first decade of this century but I would run the risk of offending anyone I omitted. You know who you are and I salute you!

A little over 10 years ago, John Sibly organised and participated in the establishment of the Edithburgh moorings. 

For a few years in that first decade, the moorings proved so popular that we had to introduce a booking system for every long weekend during the boating season. Our members clearly appreciated the security and convenience that regularly maintained moorings offered, especially in rough weather. We’ve all heard stories of boats dragging on the other side of the Gulf. 

Yes, all this activity does require leadership, organisation skills and volunteers of which we still have many in our Club. 

As much as I too would like to see the State Government spend our fees on assets for us, I wouldn’t like to hold my breath waiting. I also don’t believe we need to pay a third party to do the job for us. 

I believe much could be achieved in house, starting with a leader prepared to establish a planning group, a workshop to share the skills and knowledge involved and set up a couple of working parties. 

Possible? You bet it is!!!!!
