Hi friends!

I have a masters student who is starting to consider PhDs in Math Education. I know there is this MAA list for Math Ed Phds: http://sigmaa.maa.org/rume/phd-2004.html

I was wondering if anyone was aware of more updated lists somewhere with all the schools that have RUME-focused math ed programs in the US?

Hi Brin-

I think Eric Hsu has a slightly more complete list but also very dated.

Rob Reys and Jeff Shih have done some work keeping track of math ed PhD programs more generally. I don't have all the papers handy, but they include:
Someone should probably take on the job of updating one of these lists... a lot has changed in the last 15-20 years! (Not volunteering).

Hi RUME Community,

I am excited to share the Mathematics and Science Education (MSE) Research Community at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) will be hosting RAIDERS, an REU Advancing InterDisciplinary Education Research in STEM in Summer 2026, which includes opportunities in mathematics education research.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in making discoveries about how students learn Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM) by joining an interdisciplinary community of STEM education researchers, this is the REU for you! The summer 2026 session will offer 10 project choices across the STEM disciplines (see project descriptions at https://urc.mtsu.edu/raider-reu/). After completing the 8-week REU in July, undergraduate researchers will return to MTSU in January to present their research at the Southeastern STEM Education Research Conference (SSERC).

We are looking for STEM majors or pre-service STEM teachers interested in how people learn.

The program will run from May 31 – July 25, 2026. Selected participants will:

  • Receive a $6,300 stipend.
  • Receive travel to and from MTSU (35 miles southeast of Nashville) and housing and a meal allowance for the summer.
  • Receive funding to attend and present their work at the Southeastern STEM Education Research Conference (SSERC) in January 2027.

Please share this opportunity with interested undergrads.

Applications should be submitted via NSF's ETAP system: https://etap.nsf.gov/award/8341/opportunity/11487

Application deadline is February 2, 2026.

If you or your students have any questions, comments, or excitements – feel free to reach out at jennife...@mtsu.edu

Regards,

Jennifer J. Kaplan (she/her)

I had ChatGPT do a search of all doctoral-granting PhD departments in the U.S. where I provided the list of institutions. The list was one Jack Bookman had from doing the CoMInDS survey in 2021. The results are below my signature. Remember that ChatGPT can make mistakes, so this list is a starting point :)

I'll consult with Eric Hsu about having one of my own master's students check all the ChatGPT links/info and using that to update his list!

Sincerely
Shandy

Hi,
Staking a claim here. I will work with folk to get an updated list in place as soon as possible and host it on the SIGMAA on RUME website.

I'll post here with the link when the list is at least partially ready!!

Hi,
I spent several fascinating hours looking at the PhD program pages at every institution in the U.S. on the CoMInDS list (based on the AMS list of known math PhD-granting institutions). I compiled links and, informed by the older lists curated by the SIGMAA on RUME, AMTE, and Eric Hsu, created a spare but potentially useful draft list. The draft is COMMENT ENABLED.

Before I finalize and post the information on the SIGMAA on RUME website (to replace the old page of links), I'm asking folk here to review/comment on the google sheet draft.

To make a suggestion or addition, select a cell then select the Comment tool and type your suggestion.
• If adding a URL please provide a complete URL and briefly describe what it links to.
• After typing your suggestion, you must select the "Comment" button to attach the suggestion to the sheet. I will be automatically notified. Allow 48 hours for a response.

I plan to leave the sheet open for comment for two weeks, until December 19, 2025.

Sincerely,
Shandy
