datetimepicker leaves input field blank

The datetimepicker popup opens when i click in the field but after selecting a date it just closes and leaves the text field in the form blank
This is actually in devise/registrations/new.html.erb and page source shows the input field to have id="birth_date" but name="user[birth_date]"
