Hi everyone: I find myself needing 2 RPIs and I am looking and looking and seeing out of stock all over the place. Any idea what’s going on, and, maybe a lead of where I could order one? Thanks!

There is a IC production shortage impacting many areas.  I have found the same thing at Mouser and Digi-Key electronics supplies too. Out of stock with back orders of around 6 months.  Not to mention the surtax on on parts made in China.

I think it might be due to the metals needed for production. My son had read about how people were upgrading old computers like the Thinkpad, because of that.

Hence the Frankencomputer project.

There is also a relatively recent (since COVID) container ship import market price blow up crisis that is impacting many importers and causing big delays for ships to unload in port. The lead time has increased significantly for such imports. In LA ships are waiting 60 days to unload.

Good vid. Not materials, increased demand.

I wonder - if a 6 month backlog is insufficient, what do we do? make a 12 month buffer? Covid 19 is not an every year problem. Some inconvenience is warranted.

I'm all for increased domestic production.

As a test, I just went to Amazon and placed 20 Raspberry Pi 4 into the shopping cart.  I can have all 20 of them with free 2-day Prime delivery.  There is no shortage.

COVID-19 is not the cause but exposed symptoms of the system we have ended up building.

What happened is the beancounters figured out a way to make a very cheap pipeline to throw out widgets. This pipeline is built on monopolies (because that gets cost efficiencies) that have no built in redundancies (because that gets cost efficiencies) centered in places where the governments can exploit people (because that gets cost efficiencies).

I must step back a bit and clarify that I have nothing against beancounting - after all, I am a beancounter myself always looking for ways to tease out an extra percentage point of profit.

However, there's a price to pay for every decision and what wasn't planned for is how this very cheap pipeline behaves in the face of an expected supply model.

While we all feel that domestic production is a solution to the current issue - and it is - what we might not realize is how over decades of outsourcing, we have shifted out the knowledge, the skills, the ecosystem needed to sustain that production.

For example, if I am in Shenzhen, I can sketch out a circuit, layout the PCB, have the PCB fabricated, populated and ready for testing all in ONE day.

Due to the current very cheap pipeline we have in place however, if I am NOT in Shenzhen, instead, in Fullerton, OC for example, that's a matter of weeks when things wern't impacted.

That's because there's not one American left who knows how to help run a PCB fabrication plant - they drive Ubers now (I spoke to one of them in Kansas as he was driving me back to the airport).

Solution: bring back those skills to America.

Question 1 to the Solution: Are Americans willing to invest in themselves or they still want to continue to invest in the very cheap pipeline that allows them to buy a budget phone for $40?
Question 1 rephrased: We want change but are we willing to change ourselves?

As they were doing this, those same companies imported labor and had us train our replacements.  Engineers have always gotten short shrift.  If a muscian plays a piece of music and it gets bought all over the world, he gets cash for that.  An engineer creates something and the total license goes to the corporation who then takes all the profits.  The design and engineering resources are a trojan horse for their end.  Muscians use instruments, back up bands and players, studios, recording equipment and other resources to do their things too.  And trust me high end audio equipment is NOT cheap.

Maybe Sparkfun and other smaller vendors get the scraps.
