Repeated keystrokes required in rspec + pry prompts

Hi there - Trying to debug some specs on a Rails 3.0.2 project with rspec 2.12.0, and pry 0.9.12. 

In any/all binding.pry invoked pry prompts I must make 2 keystrokes for each character in order for it to register. 

Anyone else experienced this or have ideas how to resolve it?

I've seen this before, though I don't fully remember why. I feel like either I was messing with "fork" / subprocesses or was doing something with "stdout".
