Hello and welcome to the monthly RSpec update!

Here you can find what the core team is up to, what we are planning, progress towards our next major release, and how you can help out. This update is late this month, but for a good reason - most of us were at RubyConf, and our first beta of 3.0 is out!

Theme
Released 2.99.0.beta1 and 3.0.0.beta1. Marching towards a release candidate [1].

Last Month
  • Myron: focused on getting the master and 2-99-maintenance branches in a state so that we could ship a solid first RSpec 3 beta.
  • Jon: Extracted rspec-support gem to remove duplication across projects.
  • Jon: Handling metadata mutation to fix some outstanding bugs.
  • Jon: Remove monkey-patching.
  • Bradley: DeprecationFormatter to help smooth the transition to 3.0 via 2.99.
  • Sam: Internal cleanup in -expectations and -rails.
  • Sam: Add receive_message_chain, the equivalent of stub_chain, to the expect syntax.
  • Xavier: Polishing verifying doubles, edge cases and documentation.
This Month
  • Myron: improve the interface between rspec-core and the mock adapters.  This will allow us to address some long standing bugs with how rspec-core and rspec-mocks interact.
  • Jon: New reports/formatters API.
  • Jon: More monkey-patching to remove.
  • Bradley: Improve filtering by line number, particularly around shared examples.
  • Sam: Encouraging friends and co-workers to move to the beta.
  • Xavier: General support: triage, code review.
How You Can Help
  • Try the beta! We are working hard to make this the smoothest major version upgrade you've ever done. Go to 2.99 first, fix deprecations, then on to 3. Report any issues to the github issue tracker.
Cheers,
Xavier and the RSpec team.
