Hi,

Are you guys still active in creating FOSS software for genealogists?

thanks

List is not very active but I've been working on my own pet project of
converting an old php website for rendering my GEDCOM files via the web.
I just ported it to Node.js and made it easier for people to use and
manage it.

But my focus has been mostly on just working on my own genealogy.

The group has grown inactive, but I'm still working on OSS/FOSS, including maintaining a GEDCOM list on GitHub:

PS: I added Steve's repo to the list just now 😊

(Had to Google FOSS to see what you're referring to -- talk about being out of it -- or maybe it's just an age thing -- my old LifeLines program must be FOSS, but I didn't know it -- still used actively thirty years in.)

I was very active in discussions regarding the nature of genealogical data (boils down to the difference between "personas" (records) and individuals (persons) really), but those issues are behind us. I was very active in FHISO in its beginning era (and earlier when it called Better GEDCOM), but dropped out when I felt its direction would not reach any practical ends.

I then spent a couple years developing software that does natural language processing tuned to genealogical text. It does a pretty good job reading, for example, obituaries, discovering all the names, dates, places, organizations, and relationships between persons mentioned. It can generate JSON or GEDCOM files for the data extracted.

Since then I've gone dark. 70 years of age and whatever energy remains for genealogy is spent "doing genealogy."

One of the awesome parts of LifeLines was the report writing and all the
reports that people generated using it.

And then Paul Johnson wrote a Gedcom::LifeLines perl module to support
his lines2perl program that reads LifeLines reports and generates
equivalent perl commands.

https://metacpan.org/pod/Gedcom::LifeLines

I would love to see these migrate to node.js, but I don't have that kind
of time/energy to take that on.

At 68 yo, I'm not far behind and want to spend more time on organizing
all the family history data that I seem to have inherited as my
generation's family archivist.

PS: Tod, thank you adding a link to my git repo.

Still here watching projects & updates (though not actively developing genealogy software right now).

I’ve been watching for a while

Currently researching ideas for a genealogy program I’ve wanted to write for a while.
