I am officially cancelling the game, I live close to the fields and it just started raining.

We still had a good game of 5 on 5 in a light drizzle that eventually let up.  Traditionally Rockville only cancels for lightning, super-sloppy (muddy) conditions, and 6+ inches of snow.  So let's stick to that.

Any location posted in advance is tentative. Please check messages ASAP if you can't find us. We occasionally must move because the field is taken.

We have torn up fields pretty badly in the past with that policy. I will not be supporting that.

Yes, in the past We tore up the fields by playing when there wasn't much grass or when it was really soggy.  That's why we call the games off if it has rained a lot and the fields are super-wet (like today for instance).  But yesterday the grass got a good watering but the ground underneath was still dry and was not at risk.  So we just need to use our heads.

So do you think we should play tomorrow morning? What exactly constitutes heavy rain?

So I’ve been part of some orgs that have lost access to fields because we took chances and ended up doing more damage than we thought would be done. What if you had shown up yesterday and the fields were borderline or even unplayable? Would you have sent everyone home, or just played because, hey, we all came out already?

Perhaps this is a good time to let folks know that there is a MoCo rainout line. Welsh isn’t on it, but Rock Terrace is, and I wouldn’t mind using that as a proxy for whether we should be playing on any field. The number is 301-579-5610 extension 225. There’s also an app and a website that I’ll leave you guys to find. Google ActiveMONTGOMERY rainout line.

We don’t pay for the fields (at least not directly)- least we can do is be good stewards of them.

My $.02:
This is a pickup Listserve, there is no such word as "official" as official would mean someone is in charge and therefore liable. This is simply a Listserve of people to organize showing up to a field. Anyone can call a game at anytime (please don't actually do that, there will be chaos). What this means is, as Chuck suggests, we must all individually use good judgement.
I wasn't there last night but light rain after days of dry weather should be playable. There are also times when it's not raining but too muddy to play. Again good judgement. I agree that the rainoutline is a good rule of thumb.

Best,
