Flying Harris Mon / IC Tues

Hello,

I'm planning to go up Monday and meet Will P. at the Harris LZ at 10:30 AM.

Looks like a fairly strong forecast right now for Monday.

Maybe fly IC Tuesday if the wind calms down some.

I wanted to camp, but not so sure IC will be doable with that strong forecast.

Forecast for Harris, Monday, Nov. 7:  Looking at the HRRR, NAM, and GFS models for the period noon to Sunset (4:55 pm):  Sunny, 55-62 degrees Fahrenheit. Base winds from 12-14 mph, with gusts from 25-31 mph.  Wind direction from 278-307 degrees (true).  Ideal = 15 degrees with rotor/sink below 290 degrees.  Almost all of the hourly forecasts across the three models are for winds below 290 degrees.  Given this, I'm not planning on going to Harris on  Monday, wayyyy too much for my 11 lb. wing.

Forecast for Indian Cliffs, Tuesday, Nov. 8:  Looking at the NAM, GFS, and ECMWF models for the period noon to Sunset (4:54 pm): Sunny, 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit.  Base winds 6-12 mph (6-10 mph between 2 pm and sunset), gusting 11-20 mph with lower gusts (11-18 mph) from 2 pm to sunset.  Wind direction:  350-10 degrees (true) with the best wind direction ( 335 -10 degrees (true) between 2 pm and sunset.

If the forecast holds, I'd like to fly at IC on Tuesday.

Correction:  That should say (for IC) "best wind direction between 355 (not 335)-10 degrees (true) between 2 pm and sunset."

I'd like to arrive at about 1 pm and hope to fly between 2 pm and sunset.

Yeah, tomorrow looks pretty strong.

I'm going to make the call tomorrow at 11. ...   If it's less than forecast I'll jump in the car and go to Harris, if it's blown out I'll go Tuesday am.

The more I look at this, it just seems like it could end up being pretty good.  Just now I looked again at forecasts and out my window.

Right now at my place outside Montoursville the sky is clear and there is no wind.  Harris is 1.5hrs north of me.

The forecast for Harris today backed down a little already.  Tuesday is looking good at IC also.  I'm prepared to take the chance to go fly both sites.

We are getting ready to go and camping gear is going in the car.

GliderPort station is up and it's saying 12G17 already which is even stronger than forecast.

Haven't ruled it out yet, but it is pretty breezy in my valley town, and the wind turbines on the hill are moving pretty fast.  (Although they pitch to maximize)

We just got uptop.  It looks nice at 11:35.

Well, it turned out good.  2+ hours and a couple thousand over.

It was iffy on the forecast, but we kind of lucked out today.

We had 3 gliders in the air.  Will P., Bill V. and Aron.

Julie assisted us today.  Jim K. was out to visit us in the lz.

Tower was called before and after the flying.

Camping out to try IC tomorrow.
