RobotFramework V/s UFT

I my organization, we have used UFT in number of places to test windows application (GUI). UFT by itself is very heavy and GUI applications are also very heavy.

I want to propose Robot framework as alternative. 

How good to Robot framework. How is the learning curve for Robot, and how easy/difficult it is to automate GUIs with Robot.

I have a similar constraint in my organization too due to heavy legacy applications for which uft was found to be the only reliable tool.

I am currently in the process of creating a custom library for uft with robot. However it only works if the uft version is 14+ (leanft). I am using leanft as the driver just like selenium is to web pages. I could share the library if interested.
