Beeline Moto App- RTP -GPX Export issue?

I use the Beeline Moto app to plan some motorcycle rides. https://beeline.co/pages/app

I am encountering a problem with GPX file output from RTP which I am trying to resolve/troubleshoot. When I plan routes with multiple points, the resulting GPX file exported from RTP, when imported into the Beeline App, only routes up to the first point. See the screen shots. Bit of a drag!

If I open the GPX exported from RTP here https://gpxstudio.github.io It shows me the entire route. If I export the route with the merge all traces checked, then I am able to easily open the file in the beeline app.

I am looking for a way to export the file from RTP without going through that extra step. Does RTP have a "merge all traces feature?

Also, it seems that the text versions of the two GPX files are vastly different if compared on a website like https://www.diffchecker.com/ to compare the differences between documents.

Also, if there is a way to insert the images in-line, then please share it will be a lot easier to explain, but I hope this is clear and thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have.

Also noticed that this website only "sees" or calculates and displays up to the first point of the GPX file generated by RTP. There must be a flag or GPS marker (missing or there) in the text of the GPX file that is preventing the full route from being displayed. 


Also, the diffcheck app shows that the RTP file is about 1100 lines of data, VS, about 4300 in the one run through the GPXstudio website.

The word “traces” is not a standard GPX term, so I don’t know what they are and can’t help you there.  
Not sure how you’re posting your messages to the group, but if you use email as I do that’s an easy way to add images inline to your message.
Good luck in your research. Interested to hear what you find out.

I’ve got an email in to the developer of the website. The term (I believe) is used in other apps that use gpx files for things like hiking, walking, and off road activities, seems that they greats a lot of extra data for Garmin devices or something called Strava global heat maps. 

I’m still waiting to hear back from Beeline, I’m trying to isolate why they stop reading you GPX file after the first pin and do not continue on to the remaining pins generated by RTP. 

Turning this into a straight export (from RTP) and directly into Beeline is the goal, with not steps or conversions in between.

Maybe I missed it, but I don’t see “traces” mentioned. RTP adheres to standard GPX format only.

Hey,

I’m not trying to pick a fight or mince words. I’m just looking for solutions. There is a line of code somewhere between the GPX your app outputs and the way it is imported in another app. (Which I have named) I’m just on the hunt for that. 

I’m not getting into Symantec’s about terminology. I get it. You are doing everything by the book. Sometimes, we need to figure out what is happening outside the lines.

"Unfortunately I do not use any of those two apps so I do not want to spend time finding the issue.
My first thought would be that something is wrong with track segments (<trkseg> tag) in either of those tools (when there are multiple of them).”

David, you never said what format you’re exporting the GPX data. If it’s route data, then there are no track segments. If as track data, there are track segments but there is no issue with them. Hopefully you’re not exporting as both route and track data as explained here:

Thanks for the response. I have test a three pin route by exporting separate files as "track" only and as "route" only in each case the beeline only reads to the first pin. 

It's clear the problem is not with your software and I have given up on Beeline as a navigation option. 

Thanks for your assistance and I will continue to create routes and import them (successfully) into other applications.

That is what I did do. 

I did one export with only route checked and one export with only tracks checked. 

Tracks are more accurate when imported into the app I am using which makes sense because there is so much more data (I’m learning a bit about this stuff) in a track. 

But the new app “sees” or reads “waypoints” which I believe the Beeline App did not see multiple waypoints.

I have submitted a new RTP Mac app to Apple, and it should be available soon. The exported GPX file format is changed for the new version which may help when importing a GPX file into a GPS device. Feedback always welcome.

Technical: the GPX file change affects only track data, not route. Currently each route section becomes a new track in the GPX file. The new version has only one track, and the app converts each route section to a new track segment for the one track. For some reason that's what GPS devices seem to want.

Apple just informed me that latest Mac release of RTP has been approved for the App Store, so it should be available for download within 24 hours.  Hopefully it works better for your GPS device.

So, 

If I try to open the GPX route in the Scenic app I get several short routes that make up the whole route and I can only import one leg of the route at a time (17 legs, 17 imports) This is what the app developer suggested. 

His response:

I do see the routes are very short (like 6km). This is probably because RTP splits up the route into several <rte> GPX elements. 

If this is supposed to be one big route than that’s not something Scenic can correct. If it’s supposed to be one big route than it should also be just 1 <rte> element in the GPX with multiple <rtept> (route point) elements for the waypoints along the route, inside that <rte> element.

I assume you have about 17 route pins that make up your route in RTP, hence there are 17 separate routes. Each route goes from one pin to the next pin. Tracks can be combined using track segments, but there is no such thing as route segments. That may be because virtually everyone uses tracks from a GPX file. Routes seem to be an afterthought.

Combining all the routes into one route defeats the purpose of having multiple route pins.  Possibly a future addition to RTP is an option to combine routes, assuming other RTP users would want this feature as well.

Hi Bill,

I was just passing along the message. When I am planning a motorcycle trip especially in and around the Tuscany region, I’m not always keen on what google or apple give me between two points. This is the very reason I bought your app, so that I could create custom routes, tracks, let’s just call the rides, where I want to be quite precise about where I want to go and not have google or Apple Maps to it for me. There are many nice roads and smaller roads that can make up a ride route and it’s for this reason I turn to an app like yours to plan out the specifics. That is why there are 17 points in route/track/ planned ride. 

That’s how rides get planned and that’s why I turn to your tool, because it gives me all these options over google or Apple. 

There seems to be a lot of competition in this space between Tom Tom, Garmin, Google, Apple, Dedicated GPS or Phones with apps etc. and no ones really wants to cooperate much with the other. 

GPX seems to be the one thing that can speak between these things to create a way to interface between them to get an end result the end user is looking for. 

I’ll probably end up editing the GPX files RTP app creates by inserting the code Guido mentions in his email. 

Seems so easy and so complicated at the same time.

It’s actually quite easy to create one large route from multiple routes.

There are several methods, two of which I’ll mention here. 

BBEdit is a good free text editor for this purpose. Download the demo from here: <https://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/> and edit the GPX file. I’ve attached a RTP file and two GPX files. One GPX file has multiple routes, while the other has one. Use the “Compare” function from BBEdit to see the differences.

Another is to use the GPX Editor available from the App Store: <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gpx-editor/id924782627?mt=12>. (Another great tool from Modesitt Software!).  You can perform many tasks such as “Combine routes” as shown below.

These routes were exported using the iOS app not the OSX app. 

Worth a try probably.

I don’t think the iOS app combines the tracks into one track and multiple segments as the Mac version now does.

I would be very interested in an option to combine multiple routes into a single route.

Currently, there are several steps I must take to upload a gpx file from RTP into my 2018 Gold Wing's built-in navigation system.

Basically…

I start by creating a route using as many route pins as needed to shape (force) the route as desired. Once the desired route has been achieved, I save the route, then export a gpx using the "Route Pins" option.  Next, I edit the gpx file by adding the <rte and </rte> tags.  Lastly, I perform a find and replace, replacing <wpt with <rtept AND </wpt> with </rtept>
When imported, the Honda’s built-in navigation system sees the edited gpx file as a single route containing a start, numerous waypoints, and a destination.

Technical: the GPX file change affects only track data, not route. Currently each route section becomes a new track in the GPX file. The new version has only one track, and the app converts each route section to a new track segment for the one track. For some reason that's what GPS devices seem to want.

Tracks are more accurate when imported into the app I am using which makes sense because there is so much more data (I’m learning a bit about this stuff) in a track. 

But the new app “sees” or reads “waypoints” which I believe the Beeline App did not see multiple waypoints.

RTP Mac 4.6.02 was just approved by Apple, and should be at the Mac App Store soon.

Would like to confirm that the file created with the desktop app with the combine route segments, works a charm to import into Scenic app. 

and it also works in Beeline app when imported from the same file!
