Is it too early to start discussing routes and convoys?  I was out there in May and at the time the north rim road of Gunnison made a workable alternate, but that was before 70 started closing for mud slides. I'm planning to go out Friday and return Monday, which means I need to solve for it in both directions ... thoughts?

Other than north rim, Cottonwood to Crested Butte and then that dirt pass (Kebler?) over to the Paonia reservoir might be fun ... any other thoughts?

Cheers,

Jim

I was going to look at taking the Cottonwood route you suggested, Kebler pass doesn't look too bad and would be fun on my Tiger. If anyone is interested in making this a thing I could be convinced to hang with a pack along this route.

I'm taking off the Mitas this weekend, going back to road tires. In past years, I've been riding down 85, over Poncha Pass, heading west towards South Fork, then up thru Lake City. Probably do the same this year.

It's been exclusively a solo trip thus far, though company is welcome, there aren't many riders in my neighborhood.

As a reminder to everyone planning their routes to Montrose, US 50 is under construction about 5 miles east of Blue Mesa dam. The road is going to be closed until 5:30 PM on Friday. It will be open for traffic until 8:30AM Monday. If you take US 50 west of Gunnison you can still take CO 92 along the north rim of the Black Canyon into Hotchkiss, then through Delta to Montrose.

I'm taking my GS, so I would be up for this route as well.  Plan to meet in Buena Vista, maybe?

Tavis’s route is the way Sara and I took to Montrose last year.  I really miss Cottonwood being dirt, but I do have to admit it is pretty nice paved as well 😊

I could be talked into going that route as well. I have never been over Kebler Pass but I understand its just a gravel road, passable by a regular 2wd car.

I've taken Keibler on my Bonnie with street tires.  A little rough in spots but easily doable unless it's rained within the last 48 hours, then can be slippery.  Great views and upscale ranches for sightseeing.

Yup, agreed, Kebler's just a dirt road. But I was planning on getting an ADV out there anyway, which is a better choice if, as Norm points out, it rains.

I’m referring to the Phillips 66 on 470.

Al is suggesting leaving closer to 830.

Tavis’ Rever route suggest 6:30 of ride time. Even if that’s closer to 7 hours, and we drag ass a bit with the stops, that puts us in montrose around 5pm.

I think I am going to plan on being at the Philips 66 as close to 8:30 as I can manage.

It’s settled then. We aim for ksu 8:30 from the Phillips on 470, leave when Lord Tavis arrives, and ride like the wind. 👊✊️🏍💨

Buena Vista b/t 11 and 11:30, no problem.  Where?  That little Shell station beside the Dairy Queen knockoff?

Cheers,

Jim

I can also be there earlier.  9 would be tight, 9:30 easier.  But willing to make it work for the group.

Cheers,

Jim

Hey, everyone, can we please make sure George and Marsha are copied on this thread?  They're not on the RMRAT Google list yet, but they're interested in joining us, either from Morrison or Buena Vista.

George, so far what we've tentatively settled is two rally points, the first the usual one in Morrison, and the second a couple hours later in Buena Vista. Route from BV is Cottonwood Pass (306) west to Taylor Park Reservoir, 742 west to Almont, 135 north to Crested Butte, and Kebler Pass (12) west over to Paonia reservoir on 133.  We'll take 133 west to Hotchkiss, 92 west to Delta, and 50 south to Montrose.  Kebler Pass is dirt, but it's pretty easy, county-road dirt. What we haven't decided yet is meeting times at either rally point.

Cheers,

Jim

If we're leaving Morrison around 8:30 that puts us in Buena Vista around 10:30. We should be able to do it all in one stretch if everyone's up for it.

So ... this seems to have stalled ... what time are we meeting in Buena Vista?  I guess same question goes for the earlier meetup in Morrison ...  I will make work whatever works for others.

Cheers,

Jim

I’m confused ... what stalled? I feel like I’ve said a few times “ksu from Morrison around 830 puts us in buena vista around 1030-11”

No reason for you to come all the way to Morrison unless you want the extra miles.

If I can get my butt out of bed early enough up here in Windsor, I will try to meet you guys in Morrison for the first leg of the trip. When we get to Buena Vista, I will probably head south and take the US-50 / SH-92 route. If I'm not there by 8:30, don't wait for me.
