I am not sure how many folks in this group use the Continental TKC-80 on their primary or an auxiliary bike.  But I wanted to let this group know about a recall on the tires manufactured between January 2019 and April 2022.

My 2015 Tiger 800 came with the Dunlop Trail Masters, like them so much l made a buddy of mine buy a set for his 1100 Africa Twin.

Steve Smith bought a 2016 BMW 1200GS with low miles, and that bike has the TKC 80's on its rims?

Steve,

You mentioned Dunlop Trailmasters.  I was assuming that you meant the Dunlop Trailmax Mission.   That is what I have on my Africa Twin.   I am not familiar with a Dunlop Trailmaster.  Was I correct in the Trailmax Mission being what you meant? Or is the Trailmaster something else?

I should learn to do a better job of designating E-Steve and IB-Steve in my replies...

IB Steve, you should give the Dunlop Trailmax Mission a run on your bimmer next go around.  I believe you will find they ride just as well if not better than the TKC-70 on the road and better off of it. They also have better tread life.  They really are a purpose-built tire for the big adventure bike crowd that does a lot of road travel but wants a capable tire off road.  Dunlop really kind of knocked it out of the park for an "Adventure Travel" type tire.

I figured as much, but I also don't know Dunlop's catalog all that well.  So just because I hadn't heard of a Dunlop Trailmaster doesn't mean one doesn't exist :)

Sean,

I appreciate your insight about the tires. I don’t plan on replacing the TKCs with ADV tires, they were just what came with it. I bought it as a sport touring bike for the worn out “pavement” that I keep encountering in my travels, with the occasional foray down dirt roads. I love my FJRs but I need more flexibility to ride all the places I want to.

When these tires wear out, I’m spooning on some 90/10 rubber with good longevity. My KTM gets the knobbies (knobblies to our English cousins) for the dirt work. Besides I really feel the extra weight of that GS next to the 790. Different tires for different desires.

IB-Steve,

Gotcha. Only reason I suggested them is because they classify them as a 50/50 tire they handle more like a tire in the 80/20  range on road and probably closer to 60/40 off of it, while also getting about 8K miles life.

So while they definitely broaden the range over the 70/30 of the TKC-70, they aren't quite a 90/10 or a true  knobby 50/50 like the TKC-80 or Bridgestone Battlax Adenturecross AX41 either :)

But again, the Mission is a great tire for anyone looking for something that covers a broad range of riding with a good mileage tire :)

Hey all, I'm happy to see this conversation as I ponder new tires for my 2015 Tiger 800 XRX. I am solidly a 90/10 rider so I've followed that formula in my previous tire purchases. I'm currently on my second set of Avon Trailriders and while they have generally performed well, they show what I consider to be excessive wear on the rear. I'm intrigued by Sean's description of the Dunlop's but the 50/50 designation might be too much on the off-road side of things for what I need. Looked at the new Metzeler Tourance Next 2 but they are impossible to find anywhere. So I'm open to ideas. My brother (on his new GSA) and I are headed off to a circumnavigation of Lake Superior in August. Will need new rubber for that.  Thanks.  Brian Weberg

Brian,

Hi. The Trailmax Mission has a very round profile, so it is actually a bit surprising that it handles as well as it does off-road. It has excellent grip in all road conditions wet or dry.  It also has no center strip like the TCK-70 and handles sand and other debris you can find in the winter well.

I am not sure if this will help you at all …

But if you are looking for a true 90/10 to replace the Avon Trailriders, have you considered the Michelin Anakee Adventure or the Conti Trail Attack 3?

I had Michelin Anakee 3's on my 800 Tiger and was very pleased with their performance and wear, though I had little offroad riding with them. EWB.

I believe the Anakee Adventure has replaced the Anakee 3 in Michelins lineup.  Though the tread pattern is a little more reminiscent of the Anakee 2. I believe the 2 was a little more popular with riders anyway.

Don't let the 50/50 designation of the Trailmax Mission deter you though.  It is really more a 60/40 similar to the Motoz Tractionator GPS (which is another great tire).   But on-road the Trailmax Mission really does perform like an 80/20.  It just bites in and grips and nothing seems to really bother it.

A lot of converts on my Africa Twin forum. But I can't imagine why they wouldn't perform equally well on the Tigers of all sizes.

I know I will sound like I am a sales rep for Dunlop here, but really I am not.  But speaking of my Africa Twin board and converts. One of the members from Colorado texted me a couple of days ago to update me on his new Trailmax Missions. He texts...

"Sean i got out for a foothills ride this afternoon to break in my trailmax missions. I will not stray from those tires ever based on road manners alone.

Best tires and turn in i have felt on any adventure bike.

Those tires made me fall in love again with AT.

I liked "Rolanda" but now i love her.

It feels like she has switched from stiletto's to tennis shoes!!!"

Warf,

You may still be able to find some Anakee 3’s around at a discounted price.  But they were replaced in the Michelin catalog by the Anakee Adventure.  The Anakee Adventure uses the same carcass as the Anakee 3, but uses a new profile and tread pattern and Michelins new silica rich 2CT (front) /2CT+ (rear) compound.
