Oil filter wrench for 1200 CC Triumphs

Hi folks:

My T120 warranty is over so I did my first, myself, oil change (others done by dealer) on my 2017 Bonnie T-120.

The oil filter is in a bitchy spot with no clearance for my previous tools.

I went to AutoZone and got a 65/67 MM 14 flute wrench.  It worked but it wasn't easy.  Triumph engineers really sucked on that design.

I've always used KN filters with the external welded nut on my Beemers.  Auto Zone had one for my T-120.  I'll never buy anything else again, worth the extra $8.00..

I'll save the Triumph filter for my Street Triple but it's the last one I'll own.  KN from this time forward on all bikes.

Doesn't everyone use an impact driver so the bolt is sufficiently rounded and impossible to get off?

I think it was an 8MM Allen and I have a set of 3/8" socket allens so I can use my click torque wrench.

I would recommend using the HiFlo race fliter with the welded nut over the K&N. A couple years back K&N had issues where the nut would fail and the filter would develop a major leak ... resulting in oil on your tire and quite a few mishaps on the track. Most track companies have banned the K&N filters as a result.

Likely fixed now but why bother. The Hi Flo can be ordered off Amazon.

A HiFlo or K&N with a welded nut is a great tip, thanks.  As for Triumph Engineers, try changing the air cleaner on a Thunderbird Sport.  First remove the side covers, seat, fuel tank, all 3 carbs from the cylinder head, throttle cable and choke cable and unbolt the rack that the carbs are mounted on so you can slide the assembly out of the way to get the old air filter out and replace it with a K&N.  That's engineering!

That’s also a good point. The nut should never be used for tightening. Only loosening the filter. 

Using it to tighten cam weaken the welds and lead to previously mentioned mishap ;-) 

Quarter to half turn past hand tight is all you need.
