Just from seeing what's out there for sale I seem to see a lot of Yamaha TTR230's.  Anyone have one and what did you think of it?  Most seem to be electric start which is a requirement for me.

More than a few DRZ-400's out there as well.

A couple of oddball KTM 2 strokes from the late 90's have popped up too.
What's the word on those? I know KTMs in general are pretty well regarded.

My jacked up knee is preventing me from pulling the trigger on anything right now.  Surgery is likely some time before the end of the year and then after PT the search for a dual sport can begin in earnest.

Martin;  the Yamaha TTR230 is not DOT legal. I know that there are several aftermarket kits to make them street legal in CO, however you might have a hard time at the DMV as far as registration.  Wayne E.

Martin,

I can tell you, as a dirt biker at heart, if you are looking for a true off road experience, you use your knees to supplement the suspension.  Off roading on single-track is very physical; it's an exercise in both statics and dynamics.  Off roading to the level possible of the types of bikes you're looking at requires a lot of standing.  In fact, in must of those bikes, the seat is an afterthought, because the assumption is that you will spend most of your dirt time standing.  If those aren't the types of trails you want to tackle, then you might be better off with a tiger/v-strom/klr
