I would appreciate recommendations for where I can host River5 (for the Duke River of News).

I have been on WebFaction, but that's now owned by evil GoDaddy so I have been trying to get River5 running on a Dreamhost VPS, which uses something called Passenger to run node.js apps. But this may be too much for me to figure out, and I'm not finding much documentation from Dreamhost.

Can anyone recommend a webhost on which I can run River5?

Thanks.

p.s. Duke River of News is at http://river5.dukeriver.co and it's become a valuable tool for me and my communications colleagues at Duke University.

Anton,

I am using Digital Ocean, they have provided excellent service for $5/month. I have also setup River5 for others o Digital Ocean as well

I use Bluehost for single page River5 apps:

I was going to recommend Digital Ocean as well. Their service is as simple as it gets, and their docs are excellent.

+1 for Digital Ocean. Can't say enough good about my experience with them for the last several years!

Thanks, all.

Now that you mention it, I remember using Digital Ocean years ago for one of Dave's apps.

I'm headed back over there now to see what state my account is in.

You all are making this sound very tempting via Digital Ocean, and I have meant to get serious about rivers that serve a public, not just personal use for a long time. And now I have two young adult offspring who are looking to stretch their tech skills. I wonder if there is a progression of other of Dave's apps that would make sense as a confidence and skill-builder pathway, hosting at Digital Ocean? Thanks for any suggestions.

I would go with 1999.io or Old School. But neither is as easy to start with as River5.

Also this is not on-topic for the River5 list. It's really just for support questions re this one product.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the friendly reminder about the proper focus of this list.

Thanks again, all.

I was able to get the Duke River of News running on Digital Ocean, at http://river5.dukeriver.co/. It's on port 80, which is what DigitalOcean assigns for the one-click node apps, but Andy has given me suggestions for how I can set a different port, if that's necessary.

I also have a public view of the river, at http://dukeriver.co/ (I need to troubleshoot the styles this week).

Anton -- good news! :-)

BTW, I can't think of a reason you'd want it to run on anything other than port 80.
