There was a rio-project home page that described this technology, but it is no longer available, at least I do not find where it was before.
I found a presentation about it here:

Most probably you are using this, and JINI/River technology (once a live Apache project that lives in the Attic now) behind it. Javaspaces is a service implemented with these tools/programming paradigm, that can be used for messaging too.
