Celebrating the Ring Programming Language Anniversary

On this tenth anniversary of the Ring programming language, we mark a significant milestone that began with its first public release on 25 January 2016. Over the past decade, Ring has matured into an innovative and useful programming language, shaped by a clear vision of simplicity, expressiveness, and accessibility.

This decade of development reflects a sustained commitment to thoughtful design, rigorous implementation, and comprehensive documentation. The evolution of the language, its virtual machine, its tooling, and its ecosystem stands as evidence of the dedication invested by contributors, researchers, educators, and users who have supported the project throughout its journey.

Looking ahead, the Ring project remains committed to a forward‑looking development strategy that strengthens both its technical foundations and its role within the broader programming community. Future directions include the creation of new domain‑specific languages built on natural, human‑readable commands; the expansion of libraries and extensions that broaden the language’s capabilities across diverse domains; and continued optimization of the Ring Virtual Machine to deliver higher performance and greater efficiency. Additional emphasis will be placed on localization and translation efforts to ensure global accessibility, alongside initiatives designed to support and encourage contributors who aspire to achieve their personal and professional goals through their work with Ring.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all who have contributed their expertise, feedback, and collaboration. In particular, we offer special thanks to the team members whose early and ongoing efforts have played a central role in shaping the project’s identity and progress: Ahmed Hassouna, Mansour Ayouni, Bert Mariani, Majdi Sobain, Mounir Idrassi, Youssef Saeed, Ilir Liburn, Azzeddine Remmal,  and Mohannad Al‑Ayash. Their commitment across areas such as applications development, training, writing, packages, libraries, extensions, security, and performance optimizations has been instrumental in strengthening Ring’s foundations and expanding its capabilities.

As we commemorate this ten‑year milestone, we reaffirm the principles that guided Ring’s inception and continue to shape its future: clarity, accessibility, and a focus on empowering developers worldwide. The achievements of the past decade serve as both a reflection of the project’s enduring values and a foundation for its continued advancement.

Hello Mahmoud and Team,

Today, we are celebrating ten years of Ring.

Ring is not just a programming language. It is a vision made real through the long-term commitment, clarity, and technical mastery of Mahmoud and the team.

One of Ring’s greatest strengths is that it is not driven by institutions or business models, but by people. Every feature exists because of real needs, strong ideas, or genuine passion for programming. This approach has worked for ten years and more than twenty-five releases—and it will continue to work.

Ring is also resilient by design. It is open source, lightweight, readable, and visual. Even if the current team one day steps back, Ring can be understood, maintained, and extended by others. Its future is not locked. This makes one of the  languages that strategic projects can rely on.

We live in a time where many say that human programming has no future because of AI.
I strongly disagree.

Programming will remain a creative human-centered activity. AI will change how we code, but not why we code. There will always be programmers who think of problems, craft solution strategies for the domain, design software architectures, take responsibility, and use AI as an ally—not as a replacement.

Ring is built for those creative human programmers.

With NaturalLib, domain-specific libraries, and its DSL philosophy, Ring already offers an expressive and intuitive way to write software—often without needing complex AI systems. At the same time, Ring should integrate modern AI and ML extensions and tools in a simple and coherent way.

Ring has proven its maturity. The next step is adoption: real projects, education, and industry. In a world where many niche languages are becoming closed or expensive, Ring remains open, accessible, and affordable.

To protect this future, and respect the statding Mahmoud set for the language, we must share the same two principles as contributors: Quality of code and documentation. Every contribution should be clear, tested, and usable by any common Ring programmer.

Finally, after ten years, it is time to meet—not only online, but in person.
It is time for the first RingConf.

Ten years is a milestone.
The journey is just beginning.

Thank you very much for your wise comments.

In my case, and since I'm passionate about documentation, I hope that Ring will gradually become known in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) and throughout the Spanish-speaking world as well. I hope that other people who speak my language will be encouraged to create more in-depth courses than the one I currently offer about Ring.

Ten years of consistency is a remarkable achievement. Ring has provided us with a unique environment to explore, create, and innovate. The flexibility of the language has allowed me to explore domains I never thought possible in a scripting language, such as building AI engines from scratch.
