Birding groups during non-school hours?

Wondering if anyone knows of any birding groups or events (within an hour's drive from Providence) that would accommodate a high school student's schedule, My daughter would love to find a group to learn with, but can't find one that meets during non-school hours. Thanks for your help!

Oh I know how you feel, Megan! Including the whole Google Group on this in case there are others in the same situation...

My 15 year old is a huge birder and he has found these groups very helpful:

• Ocean State Bird Club - they just posted this info today!
• Audubon Society of Rhode Island - their events calendar is great
• Land Trusts - not sure what town you're in, but chances are there's a land trust (or two!) and they often do bird walks (or might even be open to doing one with your daughter)

Lastly, I'm happy to chat with you a bit more about this one-on-one, maybe even get our teens in the same place at the same time. Email me off list and we'll figure it out!

Hi Megan and Jeanine,

Just wanted to add that DEM Fish and Wildlife runs our annual Come Birding with Me events over the winter to learn about sea duck identification and conservation! All of our outreach programs are free. We usually run one during February break for families/little ones, and then the adult/teen session on a Saturday morning in January or February. I haven't settled on dates yet, but we always post upcoming events to our Facebook page and our website. We always run a session at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, and have added sections of the East Bay Bike Path in recent years for a more local-to-Providence option. 

Would LOVE to meet your daughter and have her join us on a birding adventure! I'll also toss out there that we have a beautiful new book out there, The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Rhode Island, that she might be interested in!
