Is this the right spectrum analyzer for RF. mics

Hello,
I just purchased an RF Explorer 6G Combo Plus, and am trying to put it to work to help me coordinate radio frequencies for wireless microphones.  I know it covers a far larger range than I truly need.  My biggest interest is 210-214 mhz, 470-614 mhz, and 941-960 mhz.  When using the unit I mostly just get RF noise, with a few peaks.  The spectrum analyzers on my wireless mic receivers are far more useful, as they are properly calibrated for my purposes, and show where the clear frequencies are.  Ultimately, I would like to use RF Explorer in conjunction with IAS software, but initially I would like to get it set up in a way that is useful for finding clear frequencies.

Is this model the right model for professional sound and RF mics?

Can anyone offer any tips on setting this unit up to be quickly useful in the field?

Why do some units have 2 SMA connectors and some have 1?  My top of the line model has only 1.

Hi,

Yes the  RF Explorer 6G Combo Plus can work certainly well for wireless microphone frequency ranges, and more.

For the 470-614MHz range for instance, you should use the UHF gray antenna included, and configure it with the RF Explorer Touch application with 1024pts resolution and capture the information in CSV file to export it to IAS. You should use the left-side connector for this frequency range best sensitivity.

Some models may include one RF module and some may include two modules. You can get more details at www.rf-explorer.com/models and the user manual www.rf-explorer.com/manual

Hello RF Explorer team,

Thank you for the reply.  You mentioned using the left side connector for the best sensitivity for this range.  This unit only has 1 SMA connector.  Would I get better results with a unit that has 2 SMA connectors?

Hi,

If you have only 1 SMA connector, then is NOT a  RF Explorer 6G Combo Plus. Please check in the About screen to know which model you have, likely a WSUB1G PLUS.

Well it looks like I have the 6g WB Plus.  Is this model good for RF mics?

Hi,

Yes, it is also a suitable model for your required frequency ranges, and perfect for your needs. You may need to enable the internal LNA for additional sensitivity if the signal detected is too low.

Thank you for the answer.

Would I be better served if I exchanged this model for the 6G Combo Plus?  In the present form, the unit I have doesn’t seem right for my professional audio needs.

Is activating the internal LNA a big deal?

Hi,

Enabling the LNA requires only 4 keys press, you get to the ATTENUATOR MENU and then select Input:LNA. Easily done everytime you need.
