Hi,

I am trying to install reviewboard on Ubuntu 20.4 and have few questions -
1. Reviewboard Install page suggests to install python 2.7. Is 2.7 a hard requirement or 3.8 will also work? I am asking this because Ubuntu20.4 is coming with Python3.8 installed.
2. Do we also need to install apache-dev or only apache2 will suffice?
3. I am trying to install reviewboard on a VM running on my local machine. Let's assume I chose domain name as "myreview.net" then will I need to make an entry in my host file also to map myreview.net to my ip? or http://myreview.net will work without making an entry in host?

Thanks,
-Shahid

Hi,

1. Python 2.7 is a hard requirement. We’ve been working on the Python 3 upgrade for a couple years now, and are aiming to support it fully in Review Board 4.0 (a big part of the delay in this release). See this writeup on our blog for more info.

2. You shouldn’t need apache-dev. The instructions we provide in the manual should be comprehensive.

3. Review Board itself does not require an entry in the hosts file, but this sounds like you're discussing domains and DNS registration more generally? If so, this is a bit outside the scope of the community support here. If you're installing a server within a company intranet, you are going to need to figure out who to talk to there about any internal DNS mappings. If you're installing just locally for testing, with the idea of eventually having a domain pointing pointing to that server, you can use an entry in the hosts file for now, but don't forget you put it there. Nobody else outside your machine will be able to use that domain.

Thank you for looking into this Christian.

on point 3# Yes, I am in process of evaluating ReviewBoard for my company as a potential code review tool so yes trying to test it locally for now. So, if I am planning to access the site using ip address then I can ignore "Domain Name" entered during the ReviewBoard setup?

Regards,
-Shahid

Somewhat. You can put in the IP address or localhost for the domain in this case. Some real, locally-accessible value is needed there, but it doesn’t have to be a registered domain.
