Upgrading RB v2.5.6.1 to v3.0.15

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade the Reviewboard from v2.5.6.1 to v3.0.15.

Could you please help listing the steps to be followed in doing so? 

I think there there's a DB schema changes as well. So need to understand the detailed steps on how this upgrade should be done.

AFAIK, you simply need to upgrade to the highest version of 2.5, and then upgrade to 3.x

You shouldn’t even need to upgrade to the latest 2.5.x release first. Review Board can safely be upgraded from any release to any newer release.

Definitely do a backup first, and try a test upgrade on a test server, if at all possible.

If you are using MySQL, do a database scheme dump and make sure all tables are using InnoDB. Modern versions of MySQL uses this by default, and if you have some tables using MyISAM format, you can encounter upgrade problems.

Thanks  Christian, that's a very good news that upgrading could be very simple. 

Yes, we have a MySQL DB & yes we'll definitely take a dump of it first.

1. I'll check whether we can have a replica of the production Reviewboard server. Do i need to have exact replica with all the RB dependencies? If that's doable then do i just need to follow the steps in the following doc for the upgrade?

2. Also, if in case an exact replica of the production server is not possible, then is it ok that I do a fresh installation of RB v3.0.15 on the fresh server by following the doc:

Also, I'll create the replica of the existing Reviewboard DB. Then will the installation steps guide me to point to the replica of the DB & at the same time change the DB schema?

3. OR do you suggest to install v2.5.6.1 first on the test server & then upgrade to v3.0.15? My concern here is I'll use the same steps mentioned in https://www.reviewboard.org/docs/manual/3.0/admin/upgrading/upgrading-reviewboard/ . So are all the dependencies mentioned in this link compatible with v2.5.6.1 as I think these installation steps would be more compatible with the latest version i.e v3.0.15? 

Please suggest.

Hi Gautam,

You can do the test upgrade on a newly-installed Review Board 3.0 on a test server. You won't need to install older versions or packages to test this out. Just the database and site directory need to be copied over, and the $sitedir/conf/settings_local.py tweaked to point to the new database location (if on a different server or under a different database name), and you'll be in shape to test the upgrade :)

Hi Christian,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm able to complete the test upgrade from v2.5.6.1 to v3.0.15.

In the 3.0 release notes https://www.reviewboard.org/docs/releasenotes/reviewboard/3.0/

It is mentioned that the following table is also changed:

reviews_review

But when I compare the table reviews_review in old DB with the table reviews_review in the upgraded DB, I don't find any change at all.

Could you please help clarify or is the information in the above URL is not correct?
