With a new feature idea, is it more effective to learn how to implement it by oneself or consult someone more experienced to implement it?

I have an idea that may potentially offer substantial new usability to source control, but as I don't know the source of Review Board, then I wonder whether it's more effective to learn how to make the contribution myself or find someone who already knows the source code and can add the feature with instructions.

I suspect you'll have a lot more success implementing things yourself, because people are busy. While I suppose it's possible you could find someone else to do it, nobody else is going to be as excited about your idea as you are, and probably unless you end up paying someone, nobody is going to want to take instructions.

What's the idea?

Success? It requires getting to know the source code, even if I'm only interested in one feature addition, not the whole project necessariy.

Unless there's some nice way to do "add-ons" or something?

Hi Matti,

Review Board does support writing add-ons (we call them "extensions"), which can do most things you might need. It depends on what you're trying to do, but extensions run as Python code within the Review Board process, and can augment the product in many ways.

As David metnioned, we're not available right now for any new projects (probably won't be for a while), but if you'd like to give us a sense of what the idea is, we can let you know whether it's something already planned for a future release, or how you might go about it.
