[UK] JLCPCB now collecting VAT

Im in the process of placing an order for some PCBs, and it looks like theyve just become that little bit more expensive.

JLCPCB are now collecting VAT on orders less than £135. Not sure what happens when you go over £135... Anyone familiar with this?

From my standpoint that is a good thing. We have to pay 25% vat on everything in Norway. Earlier the carrier had to collect the vat plus’s they charged for the service eg. $20 on top of everything. When I now buy a part from China for $1, eBay automatically add vat.

Yeah, VAT is a consumer tax, so as consumers we have to pay it. It was a nice ride while we got it for free. :-)

I started using JLCPCB because they would collect the payment for customs processing as part of the checkout process, rather than getting hit with a separate fee from the courier when the package reached the country and which would typically be more expensive as a separate payment.

Its one of those psychological things: when you pay it all together it doesnt seem as bad as if you have to make "another payment" separately just to get your PCBs. :-)

Has anyone ordered from Utsource recently? Just curious if they also add VAT at source now.

For those orders with VAT, can anyone confirm the shipping agent no longer add fees?

I have made 2 orders from JLCPCB since VAT has been introduced. both royal mail and FedEx work just fine, they add VAT upon payment with no issues with border control. It's a bummer with cheap items, but at least HRMC don't bloody charge 8 quid fee :) I prefer new system to be honest

Collecting VAT at the source will be essential for the EU starting July 2021 for objects ordered outside the EU, including China and the UK. E.g. Chinese imports below Euro 22 were free until that date, now import/tax will be applied and trasnport cost will also get higher in the future.. Be careful ordering something after this date from china, as it will not come freee, but the local post will collect tax and import and  heavy admin cost (Euro 13 in the Netherlands).  Some Chinese sites already ship from within the EU, higher cost but delivered without surprises. Be careful, something cheap will become very expensive!

UTsource only ships via carriers lately, no more cheap mail prices for small orders.

   My experience is that UTsource has significantly raised their prices due to the worldwide chip shortages.  UTsource "new" and "used" chips for which they claim to have large quantities of stock and which I've previously ordered within the last six months are now 40-70% higher cost.  As to whether their "new" chips are unused ... date codes of 15+ years old on active parts makes me suspicious.

   In the past I haven't had too much trouble hitting their $150 threshold for free courier shipping but with the current prices it means I'd only get 3/5 as many chips.  I don't support price gouging and now have a couple of designs that I won't be producing more of unless I find a different and reliable low-cost supplier.  It doesn't help that mainstream suppliers now list delivery times of over one year on some out-of-stock items.

I find that when I reach the $150 for free shipping that I still have to pay shipping due to the extra weight. The weight for each item seems to be a random guess, so you get a lower shipping cost depending on which source is selected. If they are including VAT at least it would avoid the ripoff charge added by DHL for processing customs fees even when the order is below the tax limit. Fedex seem to be more reasonable.
