Hello,

TL;DR; The Gerrit Code Review team at Google has a logo proposal to share with the community and would like to get your feedback by Monday April 18th on moving forward with this new logo.

What is the current state of the logo?

  • Currently, it is unclear what the Gerrit logo is because two logos are used in the UI or communication material. For example, in this article the writer used the Diffy and in the Gerrit Wikipedia page, the contributors use the “+/- squares” logo.

  • Currently, the 2 logos have quite complex shapes that may not be identifiable at a glance especially in tiny spaces such as the browser bar.

Why are we changing the logo?

We are proposing to change the logo so that:

  • The communication material is consistent for Gerrit Code Review.

  • The logo has a more modern look, uses simple shapes and is memorable at a glance.

What is our logo proposal?

The Gerrit logo proposal is a pink circle shape with a minus and plus sign.

  • Minus and plus votes are a unique feature of the Gerrit Code Review tool that we wanted to emphasize in the logo.

  • Pink is a unique color when compared to the other Code Review tools in the industry.

Below is an example photomontage of the article mentioned above with the new logo:

Where will the logo be displayed?

  • All Gerrit hosts will share the same logo in the Browser tabs

  • The unique logo will be used in communication material internally and externally

Give us your feedback on moving forward with this logo proposal by voting on these 2 questions by Monday April 18th:

Thank you!

Delphine, on behalf of the Gerrit Code Review team at Google

That sounds good.

Both of the above links are pointing to https://www.menti.com/wjrwha56gy, can you check?

P.S. We typically use explicit link placeholders on the mailing list, to avoid “blind clicks” from HTML e-mails.

Thank you!

Thank you for the initiative.

Can we also have other alternatives to vote?
I had the same proposal a couple of years ago, proposing to donate to the community one of the logos used in the past summits, which were all produced by professional designers and reusing the same character (the cuckoo).

Luca.

that's fixable without changing the logo.

that's a bad example, as the image is black-and-white and mirrored
(where did they even get it from? i never saw that before). i literally
did not see it until roughly the third time i scanned through the page.

that's their (*) fault, at least for not updating it. the current gerrit
home page has the correct logo in the favicon and in the footer, so it's
pretty obvious what the official logo is. of course, one could make it
more prominent by placing it in the page header, but whatever.

(*) it's an open wiki, so "they" includes "you" ...

actually, the shape and coloring are quite distinct; i can easily
identify the favicon despite really needing reading glasses at this
point. i can't say that it's a bird, but that's really not the point of
a favicon anyway.

i assure you that just about everyone will misinterpret the minus/plus
as generic diff iconography (*). that's not bad per se, but it makes
your reasoning irrelevant, which doesn't really help with branding.

(*) guess what the favicon of codereview.qt-project.org contains? :-)

so while i appreciate your initiative, i think you need to rethink your
arguments, and possibly adjust the conclusion accordingly.

also, i'm biased against glaring magenta-ish pink. but that's just me.
:-D

thanks

The first time I saw the suggested logo I wondered "why is it a symbol
for a battery"... And I definitely agree that the minus and plus leads
the thought more to "diff" than Gerrit. If the symbol had been a "+2"
on the other hand, then _that_ is a unique Gerrit feature.

We have another alternative with a different shape than the "+/-" shape. We also have another color proposal for the logo. Do you also have logo alternatives to share?

P.S. We typically use explicit link placeholders on the mailing list, to avoid “blind clicks” from HTML e-mails.
Thank you for letting me know. Question beyond this post, are there any community guidelines documented? If yes, where could I learn about them?

Best,
Delphine

The Gerrit User Summit 2019 had a nice one:

It could be iterated, removed the Swedish logo (sorry Sven) to make ti more international and reduce the number of colours to just 2 or 3.

Typically in a logo contest, you provide multiple choices and the people would vote for their favourite: that’s the way we do chose the logos for the Gerrit User Summits.

I don’t believe we ever wrote guidelines for that, but there are many examples on the mailing list, a recent post from Sven [1] and many more are at [2].

Gerrit doesn't use hot pink or magenta anywhere in the interface, so the associations are more "Does Synopsys do code review now?" and "Is my monitor broken?" than Gerrit-related. Upvote on the "+2" idea, preferably in an existing Gerrit-related set of colors.

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback on the logo proposal.

We will not move forward with the shared new logo proposal to be the unified Gerrit logo across all hosts and we won’t send any other alternative logo proposal for now.

For the record, please find the results of the two questions on Mentimeter:

Hi Delphine,
Thank you for the initiative and the democratic poll on it.

I believe that rather than a “revolutionary logo” we may need an “iteration on the current logo” for making it more suitable for low-res and with less colours, but still keeping the Gerrit brand and identity.

We will not move forward with the shared new logo proposal to be the unified Gerrit logo across all hosts and we won’t send any other alternative logo proposal for now.

What about launching a contest instead?

Happy to schedule a discussion within the maintainers / contributors at the next forthcoming hackathon in London.

Luca.

not necessarily. the cuckoo feels very much like a mascot, and it's not
a given that it must also be the logo - one can have both, like e.g.
KDE does. so while i'm personally ok with the status quo, i wouldn't
complain if someone brings forward convincing reasons for change and an
appealing design (the latter maybe via a contest like you propose).

thanks
