I previously worked on a project where they had a barcode of each subject ID in REDCap, I would like to try to repeat this, but I can't find a way to do this. Maybe they created them outside of redcap and just uploaded, I'm not sure.

Has anyone ever created a barcode of subject ID in redcap?

Thank you, Florence

You don't give us much information, and I've not worked with barcodes in REDCap. My barcode experience was gained 25 years ago but...
  • Barcodes are available as Windows fonts, so can be used anywhere you can control the font. In the case of REDCap, you could pipe the record_id into a descriptive text field and use the rich text editor to set the font. That way you can display the record_id as a bar code. Of course, the barcode font would need to be installed on the PC.
  • Presumably, you also need to label something with the barcode? A participant's binder? A specimen tube? Specialist printers are available for that and, again, you can use a Windows font with a regular label printing program such as that from Avery.
  • To read barcodes into REDCap many barcode readers/scanners are able to emulate keyboards. Plug them into your PC, position the cursor in an input field in REDCap and scan the code. It should be that simple.
