Something else that occurred to me while working on the ESP8266 sketch, is that it is quite possible for more than one WiFi device to establish a TCP port connection to the WiFi breakout board. (I confirmed it using an iPhone and an iPad.) This means that you could have multiple receiver interfaces working simultaneously.

You could have a smartphone attached to the receiver housing, and a second smartphone strapped to your forearm. Both devices would run the same app, and would be capable of controlling the receiver and displaying receiver data simultaneously. This would provide a redundant back-up interface for reliability, and also a convenient way to hold the receiver and antenna high in the air while still viewing the signal strength and bearing directions.

Best of all, there is no additional software to write: this feature comes for free with the UART-to-TCP bridge functionality.

This opens up some cool possibilities. I just ordered the Adafruit serial cable today.
A good reason to hang onto old iPhones when upgrading.
