Hi everyone!

This is Sugi and I'm new to rLab. This is such a great place and I look forward to learning so much!

I have a budding interest in electronics and have been playing around with an Arduino. I want to see what else I can do with it or generally what I can do with the electronic equipment at the space. My focus right now is on PWM, how it works, its advantages and disadvantages. At this point, I only know what it is.

It would be great if someone could give me an induction or if I could accompany you on any of your own projects (to do with PWM or otherwise).

Thanks,
Sugi

Hi Sugitha and welcome to rLab,
There's no specific induction for the electronics equipment at rLab so
you're welcome to use any equipment that you feel comfortable working with.
As for help with projects you can post here if you have specific
questions but often more general queries like this are better handled
face to face. We've restarted social evenings for members on Wednesday
nights (8pm onwards) so if you dropped by then it quite likely that
there would be someone knowledgeable around who you could talk to.
Sometimes there's workshops that get run on various topics at the lab
so that might also be a route to learn more but they don't happen very
often. When they do they'll be announced here on the mailing list.

Sugi,

I am often down on Wednesday evenings and would be happy to discuss these things with you.

Hi Vance,

Happy new year! Hope you are doing well!

I was wondering if we could catch up in the lab sometime. I went there last week but was a bit lost, not knowing where to start or where to find things. There is no hurry, but let me know if this is possible.

Also, are components like LEDs/resistors/capacitors/sensors available in the lab? I couldn't find any, but I might have missed something obvious.

Thanks
Sugi

Hi Sugi,

About components - we don't generally keep a stock of generic components, but there are quite a lot of resistors of many values in several boxes mostly either under the electronics benches or in the store cupboard. It may take some digging to find:

Resistors - yes we have a lot of different values of low power axial leaded, which is the most useful kind.
Capacitors - maybe - if you find some, check the rated voltage etc because they might be very low voltage rated.
LED - there may be a few in some boxes in the cupboard.
Sensors or anything else - probably not, we got rid of anything which was too specialised some time ago.

Also note that we sometimes have electronics Zoom meetings on Fridays - I've lost track of when the next one is the last one was quite a while ago I think. Jeremy or Gavin usually organise them.

Regards

Mark

The zoom calls are the first Friday of the month, so this Friday. The last one was cut at 50mins so need to chase that. Happy to send the details if needed, drop me a direct message.

Look forward to it!  Monthly is a good cadence.

50 mins would not be so bad if there was some warning and expected, so we make sure we get in everything people actually want to show or ask!

Thanks for getting back to me. I'll have a look when I get back.

I'd love to join the meets, count me in!

Some components are kept in the store cupboard in the main electronics
room but it's a bit pot luck what's in there. If you're after resistors
then you'll probably be in luck, LEDs maybe, others probably not.

Sugi,

I think most of your questions have been answered. Normally I would be happy to meet you at the lab, but at the moment I am isolating prior to a hospital visit.

I suggest you join the electronics call and introduce yourself to that group, a number of whom have responded below. If you need further short-term help then one of them may be able to meet with you.

I hope everything is okay and you get well soon Vance.

The zoom meet will definitely help.

Take care,
Sugitha
