Hi,

On the 1st July, the European Union introduced new tax regulations for goods being shipped from outside the EU. (There were also new regs for goods shipped within the EU too).  This placed the role of tax collector on to the online marketplace, so customers within the EU have to pay VAT at the time of purchase, and the marketplace then pays the VAT to the appropriate EU tax authority.

Sadly, Tindie were unable/unwilling to do comply with this.  As a seller, this has meant two things; a) EU customers were getting unexpected charges, tax demands and delays. Generally a lot of hassle. And b) far fewer EU customers due to those that were aware of the new rules and don't want to suffer point a)

This took a lot of Tindie sellers by surprise, as it was expected that they'd be complying with the new tax rules.  When it became obvious that they weren't, I needed to find another solution.

I now have a dedicated web shop for selling RC2014 kits; z80kits.com For EU customers, I collect VAT at the time of purchase.  The kits are shipped via DHL, I pay DHL the tax, and DHL do all the messy tax stuff with the tax authorities in the destination country.

It does mean that for EU customers, things look more expensive now than what they did on Tindie.  This is partly because VAT is included at the point of sale, rather than charged by your local postal service.  Also the shipping is higher than what it was too.  However, with the typical fees charged by postal services for collecting tax, this is slightly cheaper in most cases.  But much quicker delivery though!

This also means that I am no longer shipping kits to the EU via Tindie.

For the UK and the rest of the world, things are pretty much the same.  You can still order via Tindie, or via z80kits.com whichever is more convenient for you.  For now, I am still only shipping via Royal Mail, although I'll be bringing in DHL shipping as an option on Z80 Kits at some point.

I'll be launching z80kits.com tomorrow in a RC2014 Newsletter with a discount code to get you all started.  You are all signed up for the newsletter, right? Well, if not, here's a link :)

Please bear in mind that the site is still very new, and there's still a few items to list in there, some bits to tidy up, and probably the odd error or two to fix.  The contact form works, though, and you can always email me if you need.

Cheers

Spencer

Hi Spencer,

As a fellow who has been online selling for years, I truly feel your pain.

Looks nice and everything is easy to find. I assume it's the preferred place to order so that less people run off with their cut of the payment ?

You do need the company number. registered address etc on there and the distance selling regulation stuff. At least I couldn't see them when I looked.

Thanks Alan,

The registered address is on there, although I just noticed that the company number isn't. Give me 5 mins and it'll be here;

Cheers

Very sorry to hear about this hassle.  However, the website looks very nice and hopefully this will be a benefit in the end.

This kind of thing is exactly why I prefer the software end of things!

Best of luck,

The Spencer website is well done.

The problem is actually TIndie?
If Tindie were able to handle sales tax for the EU, the problem would be fixed.

The company is based in CALIFORNIA, USA.

Let's be honest. I buy in many non-EU countries and China, Hong Kong and Taiwan come first.

I have informed the German customs that I would like to do the customs clearance and handling myself. Called self-declaration.
DHL (German deliverer) is no longer responsible and the additional costs of 6.00 euros do not apply.

Purchases via ebay from the Far East will be charged with sales tax. The seller pays the sales.

I wish you good luck with the new shop.
Kurt

Just a quick update for anybody that did not see this original message, missed the newsletter, does not follow me on Twitter, and is not on Instagram, but z80kits.com is the only way to buy RC2014 kits to be shipped to the European Union.

I think most people have got the message, and orders on z80kits.com are taking off.  However, I still get regular requests on Tindie for shipping to the EU.  Unfortunately I can't add a store message that is country based, and I'm sure Tindie won't be too impressed if I advertise my site to everybody.

So, I'm not sure how to reach more people.  I guess if you're in the EU and reading this, maybe just check with your friends, your parents, your local butcher, they guy at the bus stop, the old lady that lives across the street, and make sure they know that z80kits.com is where they need to go for RC2014 kits.

Thanks :-)

Hi Spencer,
The last time I looked, the rc2014 site didn’t mention this, it might be worth updating it if you haven’t already done it.
Cheers,
Mike

The good thing is that ordering from z80kits.com works as planned.
I just have to get the soldering iron out and get to building the kits I got...
