I picked up a Rapid Rise derailleur medium cage (RD-M951) at the Nutmeg tag sale. It's missing the lower jockey wheel and the wheel that it had was secured by a (hex head) parts can replacement.

I'm wondering how people would approach getting this guy back in action--that is, getting a replacement wheel (or wheels) and replacement screws.

A twist to this story is that I'd like to see if it would work on my 11sp cassette. Curious, too, if people have tried.

I have a Clipper 42/26 crankset connected to a 11/34 cassette.

Anyone have know if cages on these are interchangeable with other Shimano derailleurs? I'm wondering if it would make sense to buy a donor derailleur for a screws and cogs--perhaps even get a long cage in case I need it.

I'd like to put this guy on my Susie. Not opposed to betting a 8 or 9 speed cassette, but my 11 speed works well and my pocket book would prefer to conserve the parts I've already own.
That said, my main motivation is to resurrect this Rapid Rise. Open to all ya'lls thoughts.

Best,
Ryan

I have had really good luck with the Velo Orange replacement pulleys, although it appears that they are out of stock of the 11t replacements that would be correct for that derailleur. I've also used 10t replacements and they also worked just fine. There are a variety of options on ebay and aliexpress that should work great, as well as some shimano replacements that would be cross-compatible.

I've used the 9s variant of this on 11s cassettes but I did have to do some hacking to get enough cable pull to traverse the entire cassette--this will be more of a limitation of your shifter than anything. I'm assuming friction shifting; getting this is index well across 11s will be an exercise in frustration.

This derailleur claims to only wrap around a 32t cassette cog, but can certainly be pushed to 34t. You'll be out of capacity by 6t, but if you're able to run a longer chan and avoid cross-chaining in the small ring you should be fine. If you do need a cage swap, it should be possible with most of the other similar period long cage derailleurs.

Good luck!

Thanks, Thomas, Michael!

This largely confirms what I was thinking, namely, that these parts aren’t too esoteric and might run into range issues.

My thumb shifters work with my 105 so curious what they do with the RR. Might try it out this weekend.

Happy to report that this guy works quite well on a 11spd. For the time being,

I swapped out the jockey wheels from my 105 derailleur and on the stand it works great. We'll see once I put wheels to dirt/pavement.

This guy (an RD-M951) came with one jockey wheel (the guide (top) wheel) which was secured by a male hex m5 machine screw. The fasteners from my 105 were too short for that wheel, fine for the tension wheel (as was the bottom tension wheel screw). Not sure what's going on--if guide wheel is wider on this model--but currently working fine.

I have replacement jockey wheels on their way, but still curious if the jockey wheel machine screw is different for the top (guide) wheel.

Cheers,
Ryan
