The dog days are here in Wisconsin, along with a lot of smoke from the fires up in Canada. Did the Mink Ranch Road loop, 80km, reasonably flat. Here's what a 150+ AQI day looks like in Port Washington. I'm afraid Leah and her Michigander pals have it pretty bad today, too.

August in Wisconsin also means corn. It's tall and fragant now.

@Ted - That Heron's a gem. Sorry to hear about the poor air quality--I can relate given the poor SoCal AQI earlier in January.

Here's a snapshot of my Leo from this morning's Rose Bowl ride.

I checked a bucket-list ride off yesterday and it exceeded my expectations. A massive 1350m climb up punchy singletrack from the valley to the alpine, with a moderately technical descent the entire way down. I rode my Stooge Scrambler which was the perfect tool for the job, though obviously everyone else was on modern enduro bikes and thought we were crazy. Could it be done on a hillibike? I think my hands would be wrecked from modulating v-brakes on that immense descent, and I'd definitely drop the saddle at the top of the hill, but otherwise I think one would do fine with some grippy 2.6's!

Thanks! It's still my favorite Riv bike. Rich just made a new set of wheels for it and I baptised them on our local strada bianca. The smoke and humidity have moved on, replaced by morning temps near 10C (50F), blue skies and puffy white clouds, and a steady northeast breeze. Heaven on earth riding in SE Wisconsin.

Handlebars will be getting a re-wrap soon.

Jeez, August is coming to a close pretty quickly here. I got out for a couple nights' camp on a small island off the coast with a handful of friends this past weekend, and a buddy got this snap of me with my Bombadil. The campsite was secluded and rustic, without water but did have a pit toilet (a ways up a hill, mind you). But it was also beachfront, and in an apple orchard with some ripe fruit. I packed pretty light, since overnight temps were pretty warm and there was no rain in the forecast. Plus, there was a grocery store on the island so I knew I wouldn't starve as long as I had >12h of calories.

Nice Bombadil setup, and you got a perfect fender line.

Took my touring modified Bleriot for whats turning out to be an annual august bicycle trip. This year my buddy and I did the Olympic Scramble 360 route which is a big ol' hilly lap around the Olympic Peninsula in WA. It gets pretty remote out there and the Bleriot handled those Forest Service and loggiing roads well all loaded up with gear.

Hope y'all are enjoying your bikes out there!

Wow, Kyle, the Olympic Peninsula! Such a beautiful spot, and now I'm looking at your GPS tracks and planning when I can go. Wondering what mid to late September would be like out there.

Your first photo inspired me to get up on the Morning Mountain trails here in Nelson. Beautiful cedar-hemlock forest, sweet singletrack, and great climbing.

First long ride on my new-to-me Sam (thanks to Josh C for parting with it!) on some prime Wisconsin rail-trails. I swapped on the Bosco bars, which I think definitely live up to the comfort hype, and am working on accumulating the necessary racks/basket/fenders to fully outfit it for light bikepacking/commuting/shopping/kid-hauling

Looks awesome, John - what tires are you running on that Hunq?  (And what gen is it?)  I'm trying to max out my gray/kidney one and thinking I can fit a Fleecer Ridge in the front, but probably have to go narrower in back.

Thanks Sue and McG! Sue, that terrain is out here in the Kootenays, Southern Interior BC. McG, the Hung was built in 2015 and those are Fleecer Ridge front and rear. Great for the ride out here.

Hey Shannon,

In fact, they are Avid Arch Supremes. The marketing pitch for them in the mid-90s was something like 'Good brakes help you stop. Great brakes make you fly.' After 30 years of continuous use, they still encourage me to fly every now and then.

I know it’s September now, barely. Hopefully these still count.
Caught a flick of my Hillborne this morning overlooking beautiful Burbank and with the Verdugos in the background. I just through on some Orthopedic bars and dialing in Russ’s jumbo thumb shifter from soma. I caught a flat and met a fellow Hillborne rider named Brody. I caught a flick of him as I was pulling over again to change a tube. Brody if you see this hit me up. We just started a monthly bike field trip. Hopefully every last Sunday of the month.

Charlie -

Fun pedaling with a fellow Riv rider. Sorry about that flat. Congrats for catching a still image of me and my double TT out in the wild. I'm usually going too fast on the Sam to be captured in focus:).  Sundays are typically grandma days but def hit me with an update on your upcoming Sunday rides. Maybe I'll be able to swing it.

Cheers,

Brody

Hi Ben,

Your Atlantis looks familiar so I'm curious. Did you purchase it from another list member? I sold my 2013 Waterford built "Hunqapillar Gray" Atlantis several years ago to someone on the list and he put it up for sale not long after he bought it. 53cm seat tube, designed for 26-inch wheels. My first Rivendell; of course others followwed!

Best,
Rich in ATL

i bought it from a member of the fb group. I am told that he was the second owner and the first had it painted  hunq gray by D&D. It's a Toyo made 700c, size 58. I've had it for almost 6 months and it's been a blast.

Ben, thank you for the update. You’ve got a rare Atlantis. Doubtful there are many from the Toyo era painted Hunq Gray. A versatile bike. Sometimes I wish I still had mine. Enjoy!

George - The majority of the video is the Des Plaines River Trail. South of Lawrence there are a lot of single track offshoots. Additionally, Weber Spur Trail, and some single track off of the North Shore Channel and North Branch. If you want to message me directly I can send you the route.
