A lot of people have emailed asking what's coming when. Here's a rough outline of what's coming in the next 7 months or so
Complete bikes are tricky nowadays; A lot of manufacturers were shut down in the beginning of the pandemic and we're really feeling that gap in work now. We have to be more flexible in what parts we pick on the completes and you'll have to trust us to not pick anything bad. It'll likely get fancier actually.

Braxton went to Rivendell yesterday and sent me these photos...I think they show the color a little more truly...

Wow, I was so excited about this bike and... well.... I don't like either color. Teal and Avocado (?), but neither of them the forest-service green or orange (or silver, or black) I would like. I guess I'm out and waiting for another run. Maybe I'll just get a Sam.

Which reminds me: When, I say when, is Rivendell finally going to make a full jammies body suit (all wool of course)?!! Certainly excellent for campouts or lounging at your favorite coffee joint, but these bad boys really shine when working from home! And please, please make it available in a Blanket Sleeper style.

I laughed, but in a friendly way, not a sneering way, at your enthusiasm, and opened my eyes wide at the build list; hi-end! Nice!I'm not sure a Platypus is my cup o' tea, but yours as described will certainly be an elegant build and, if you ride it as you've ridden your others, it will be a very practical build.Between my eyes and my monitor, I can't say what the frame color is; can you clarify in words what I can't see on screen? Purpley-gray?Me, I am just making final arrangements to trade the remnants of a Riv Road custom for a brutalist, cheap (but nicely cheap!) ready-to-ride Redline Monocog 29er; this after I just had the same weird custom replaced by a locally built, more integrated (racks and fenders and lighting routing), more liberally tired (takes 42s under fenders) replacement.Patrick Moore
... Patrick, the Redline Monocog is a great bike and I've very nearly bought one on a couple occasions; probably would have were it not for the fact I've got a half dozen very similar bikes already.

I definitely see a Platypus in my future but have my own ideas for a set up. I can be a fraternal twin with you and Roberta, but not an identical. I think the grips would complete the bike's color scheme (and I am soooo jealous of that beautiful pomegranite color). I intend to go with cork grips and they feel nice and weather even nicer. I had Honjo fluted fenders on my Soma. They were beautiful and I loved them but after two years the back bolt wore through the metal. But I ride my bikes hard in all weather conditions. I have gone with Woody fenders ever since and although they are pricey, I have found them well worth it. I am about to move back to the Pacific Northwest and will need a bike that can take the rain. I look forward to seeing your finished bike. Please post lots of pictures.

Hi Friends,It’s tough out there, isn’t it. Could we use a little joy? Would you qualify a sneak peak at a new Rivendell bike model as a joy-bringer? If not, stop right here....Are you still with me? Get ready to be delighted! I have wanted a new Rivendell mixte ever since the rumored Anniversary Mixte of 2018. Will - who has had too many emails from me about the Anniversary Mixte, which became the Fancy Cheviot, and ultimately evolved into the Platypus - sent me an email. And in that email was the most remarkable photo...It’s Grant, with my new Platypus in his arms. Everything about this photo is so endearing. The way Grant is proudly presenting the bike, this long-awaited fancy mixte, named after his favorite animal. The way his eyes are covered so you can’t read the pride in them but you can see in his outstretched arms how he hopes you are pleased with his masterpiece. It’s too much for me. I’m overcome. It is likely to go on my wall...the photo, not the bike. No, the bike will be ridden half to death. I won’t be precious about it, but I will dress it up fancy. Analog is doing another one of their famous colorful wheelsets and dyno systems for me, and the accent colors we chose are rose and teal. (If you only have 2 bikes, you get to splurge on the builds. See photo for wheel/dyno selection.) Rivendell will do the rest of the build, and I am really looking forward to this because I haven’t ever chosen the parts for a complete bike build before. My last *new* Rivendell was the 2012 Betty Foy, and I didn’t know a thing about bikes then, so I just requested Keven choose everything. In 2020, I know just enough to have an opinion and I’m really looking forward to Will’s phone call about the parts this week. The mixtes are the best bikes Rivendell makes, and they have outdone themselves with this beauty. It’s regal, like a ballroom gown, and made better because it’s not just a pretty face. It may appear as a contradiction, because it is exquisite, yes, but not at the expense of function. It is smart. Capable. Beautiful. Useful. This is the DNA of a “joy-bringer.”I hope this beautiful bike brightens your day a little bit, and stokes your excitement for Grant’s upcoming, long-awaited and much-celebrated Rivendell mixte. I wish you all a Platypus this November!Leah

Re-radiusing the wavy fender to fit 700c is very easy. Velo Orange even has a blog on how to do it: https://velo-orange.com/pages/re-radiusing-fendersYou'll have to gently squeeze the fender together so it ends up being a bit narrower. The wavy is pretty wide from the start so you'll probably be ok if your tire choice isn't super wide.I’m off to hunt down some metal fenders now. I didn’t realize that finding fenders for 700c wheels would be difficult - it seems most (of the ones I like) are made for the smaller width tires. I was hoping to put my favorite waterfall fenders (“wavy” by Velo Orange) on the Platypus, but alas, 650b only. And I don’t like the snakeskin look, so I limit myself further yet.

Dave, this is fantastic. My tires will be 43 or 44, I think. But won’t the 650b fenders be too short on a 700 c wheel??? If not, I would totally go for it.Sent from my iPadOn Oct 5, 2020, at 4:41 AM, Dave S <macnc...@gmail.com> wrote:

I suppose I don’t understand how 650b fenders can work on 700 and vice versa, but it’s encouraging to think that they CAN. If Analog can somehow mock up the wavy VO fenders for my raspberry Platypus, I’ll be delighted. If not, I probably will go with SKS and call it good.Nothing stresses me out like asking people to do fenders for me. And worse, asking Vegas bike shops, who would not have the skill and not see the need. Ugh, I’m tempted to go in disguise! Assume a new identity. Use a fake name. “Yes, hello, I have a fender job for you. The name’s Betty. Betty Foy...”
How about these: (I was never a big fan of wood fenders because of the flat profile, but now that he makes them with a compound curve, I am seriously pondering them for my Hubbuhubbuh--almost exclusively for style points, since it will rarely be ridden in the rain.

I am generally not a fan of wood fenders either but I can't argue that those would look good on the Ras-Platypus. I'm trying to figure out what fork crown that is on the Platypus, it's very similar looking to the Clem / Hunq one but not the same (my Clem's got a half moon shape where that has three dots). Knowing that inside dimension would be helpful before suggesting over-60mm fenders, but VO makes a 63mm fluted model for 700c that would look good imo.
Re-radiusing is quite doable but also nice to avoid if possible, since it's really not that hard to mess it up and end up with the wrong kind of wavy fender.
