New member with old Riv

Hello all,

I just joined this group a few weeks ago and have just been sitting back reading posts and getting the lay of the land, but now I'm ready to step out of the shadows and introduce myself.

I'm new to this group but not new to Rivendell. I'm the original owner of a 1996 61cm grey-blue All-Rounder.

I had basically stopped riding for about 15 years, but started up again last August.

I have had the A/R set up in multiple modes in the past, but currently it is a fendered drop bar road/path machine with Rene Herse tires.

I'm thinking of trying out some upright bars on it, but I had moustache bars on it in the past but never really liked them. I probably never had the right stem setup though.

I'll include a few pics of my machine. It could use a repaint, unfortunately most of it is garage wear.

Oh wow, that's beautiful.  Naches Pass I assume?  It's making me second-guess my decision to go with fatter tires / fenders on my Clem instead of those.  

I feel like 95% of people who try moustache bars come to the same conclusion. I'm not sure if it's because you need a super short stem to make them work, that road levers just don't work very well in this orientation, or if it's because they're just not really that great for most people.  I tried about ten years ago and it didn't stick, and I tried again about a year ago to the same effect.  Albatross bars on the other hand tend to work for 95% of those who try them.

I've tried the (original model) moustache bars on 6 to 8 different bikes over the years -- last on the Hon Solo before swapping for shortened Surly Open bar -- in all sorts of positions, and found them most tolerable -- still not very tolerable -- when positioned forward and low like my drop bars; sufficent reach to bar, with sufficient saddle setback, kept excessive weight off my hands. But the M bar lacks -- what is essential for me -- the mid-way ramps position and the sit-up flats position of drop bars.

I like Moustache bars. I swapped between those and drops regularly on my All Rounder when I rode it more. Right now it has Moustache bars on it. Adding the stoker levers made it a better option for me since that added an additional, more upright, position. Here are my bars as they are currently set up:

Greetings Brother Jim (#096047) from Brother Craig (#096053), 

     If ever there was a perfect bike the All Rounder is it. Primarily because it can be perfect in a variety of styles. Tires, wheels, handlebars, saddles, racks (front/rear/with/without), fender/no fenders, this bike can fit alotta niches.

     I started out in moustache mode also. That line drawing on the front of the Riv Catalog was totally cool. But it didn't last long. The stem  was too long and low. One long distance tour wreaked havoc on the neck and shoulders. And like Patrick, I was missing the ramps. Tried some neat Jitensha Touring bars but they were too wide and flat bars just don't have that natural position your hands fall to when gripping the levers of a drop bar. Always end up heading back there.

In another discussion about handlebars I had an experience in pursuit of "best for me" bars that was similar to the Moustache bar dichotomy. I'm either short of torso for my height or long of leg for my torso...and I need a short reach. I can get that by an under square frame or by bodging my fit with short stems and short extension drop bars. In that conversation I noted the new crop of gravel-oriented bars feel very confining at two positions and too narrow on the hoods or tops. I had a chance to get an XO-1 and had a reality check about the bars on a ride (was a dealer) and  getting a purple XO-2 with the WTB Dirt Drops instead. 

Grant talked me through options for an adventure road fit (in 2000) and extolled a frame that was in container, crossing the ocean with a 2° upsloped, undersquare top tube and 2cm extended head tube he designed for long rides and light loads with inspiration from French randonneuring. I've had that Rambouillet ever since. We can compare beausage later. Nothing grossly unkind, just a collection of two decades of moments. I earlier proposed "beausavage" to better represent the diary that my orange bike's finish represents.

Ahh, nothing like an All-Rounder sitting in your garage to jump start your riding. The AR was one of my inspirations to purchase an Atlantis in 2015.
