When I initially built up my Legolas, I built it to be what it is: a cyclocross race bike.  As such I had it set up as a 1x10.  Most of my winter riding is Wandring, and Wandring in the east bay is freaking strenuous.  I decided that my Wandrer career is ahead of me and my cyclocross race career is behind me, so I conceded and set up the Legolas as the 2x10 that I had designed it to be capable of.

Today was my first Wandr on the new 2x drivetrain in Orinda.  It was only an 18 mile ride but had nearly 3000 feet of climbing.  Did I mention Wandring can be strenuous?

Anyhow, pics prove it.  My new 2x crankset is a White Industries VBC, with 42/28 rings.  Shimano CX70 front Der, and a Shimano friction barcon

Happy Thanksgiving to all y'all.  I earned my dinner!

Nice! How does that SRAM Force 1x rear der work on that set up? Wondered why one couldn't use it on a double or triple. Nice to know that it still works on 10 speed.

Thanks,

The Force 1x rear Der handled things well in this setup, but I would say this is around the limits.  The way these 1x derailleurs maintain the right gap to the cassette is there's a big offset from the pivot to the upper jockey wheel.  It's less about parallelogram tilt.  So the path the upper jockey takes is a lot different between big ring and small ring, so in setup, there are compromises.  I think a triple could work, provide the spread is not a lot bigger than the 14t jump I'm running now.  I think some wide spread triple like a 48/36/24 would probably be really tough to set up.

I'm not sure I understand the issue.

One of my bikes, a race bike circa 1985, is equipped with a new 10-speed Campagnolo Centaur RD, a 7-speed IRD freewheel and new Shimano indexed 7/8 speed DT levers. Front is IRD Defiant crankset with TA Zephyr @ 46 / 30. The only little hack was replacing the derailer's limit screw with a longer one to prohibit 'over-shifting'—for want of a better word. Though I manage friction-shifting quite comfortably, I've grown to embrace 'click' mostly because why not? The system works perfectly.

Full disclosure, my other bikes are all 9-speed with Dura Ace dt levers and Shimano RDs

I don't understand the mechanics of the issue even after Bill explained it cuz I'm not smart enough, but I can vouch for a 1x SRAM derailer being a little weird for a double. My Riv Custom has a SRAM Rival 1 with a clutch and 11-50 11-speed cassette. Started with a 34t chainring, I recently added a 26t inner and a front derailer. It took some fiddling with chain length and B Screw adjustment to get the RD to track all the cogs in both front gears; it works now but the front shift is kinda stiff and sometimes it doesn't take, like the RD is fighting the action.

It works for me cuz I had these parts on hand and made them do a thing I wanted to do, but I can't recommend it. Double (and triple) drivetrains should have rear derailers built for them.

Jock, I like the drivetrain on your exquisite Paramount. I'm really curious what chain and front derailer helps bring everything together so well.
Thanks so much!
