We need a little good news in the dark and twisty tale that is 2020. Lots of you will have received shiny new blue and green Clems at the time of this writing. I consider it your obligation to cheer the rest of us up with your new bikes. Stories and photos and impressions are encouraged and appreciated. Did you light up your world with dyno? Adorn the bike with new bags? Did you do a really wild color scheme? Are you pulling little bobble-headed cherubs in a bike trailer, or have you plopped them in a baby seat? Or maybe you are hauling adorable dogs in your baskets? Maybe your Clem is just streaking around naked because it’s your new exercise bike and you want it light. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t have to imagine if you would post your 2020 Clems right here.

I hope the Sams, Appaloosas, Platypuses, and Charlies will also have dedicated threads when they arrive. These threads will also be really helpful for prospective shoppers to have this info.

Thanks in advance,
Leah

First I would like to say don't forget good ol' Gus and Susie. I am waiting on my Susie with (colorful) parts in hand.

Second, let me apologize if I've told my Clem story before, more than once. I will keep it brief.

Clementine at sunset in 2016. It looks so...short. More photos here: https://goo.gl/photos/Xyf3kVj4ENcXVSiw5

Got an OC (Original Clementine), one of the last completes in the first run. Frame was damaged, Riv sent a replacement, with the cream accents only found on the framesets (now standard). Loved the bike, sold it to raise some money I needed. Late in 2019, ended up with a bronze green Clem L.

IMG_20200813_193346037.jpg

Currently the only shot I have of El Clem with the new racing tires from Rene Herse. Eventually will do a proper photo shoot.
More pics of the bike here if you haven't seen it: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qc6rMfoke1P8X9Dj7

I built it up similarly to my OC with fenders and racks. Since  I started with a frameset, I built a set of wheels and used a dynamo front hub. Also, because I was planning to run 2.25" Thunder Burts, I bought the widest VO 700c fenders and re-radiused them for 650B. The bike is basically my car for local trips, with front and rear lights--and a brake light!--and my back o bike bags.

I will eventually basketize it, but currently that would make parking it in the living room closet more difficult than it already is. Recently I swapped out the tires for Rene Herse Switchback Hill EL (actually came labeled Compass), with plans to use the Thunder Burts on my in process Hubbahubbah build. Also, though I like the pink streamers, they are a bit 1980s prep with the green, so I am going to try this classic set:

That bike feels like the party of no reason other than to celebrate being alive and fabulous on a Clem.
I categorically approve and vote yes.

Yes, I agree with Kim - Mark’s bike is a party. A party bike - that could be a new designation/category!

Something unique that the Clems offer - freedom from pretense, and a defiance of classification. Clems do not take themselves seriously; finery is not required. There is no particular way a Clem was meant to look. Clems are diamonds in the rough, hidden gems, unsung heroes. Do what you will with them; they won’t complain. The Clem is the bike of the Lone Wolf!

When I took my Betty to the shop, she was a looker. Everyone knew she was a classy gal, lugged and lovely, something really special. The Clementine (that’s what I call my 2019 Clem L) at first glance appears to be a quality cruiser, but once the mechanics put hands on it, they know their mistake. They start noticing the seat lug and the “tough bike to love” and the manhole cover head badge. There isn’t a man alive that hasn’t test ridden my bike and been anything but impressed with it.

I’ve seen Clem Ls set up for mountain biking, commuting, kid-hauling, pleasure-cruising. My Clem is a complete conundrum in that I’m using it as an exercise bike but it’s set up to haul (I like how it looks with the racks and basket and bags and yes, I’m not using them and it’s unnecessary but just let me live). It’s rated to mountain bike standards, but has Gravel King slicks and dyno and is a road queen. If you want to see Clem diversity, just search #clemsmithjr on Instagram. They really are unwilling to be set into a single category.

One iteration I’d really like to see is Clems for Kids. I started that hashtag on Instagram and wish it would take off. If you invested in a Clem L, your kids could have a lot of time riding it. I have a 45 Clem H for my boys and love it, but the L version would be great because it would fit more sizes.

Enough of me, back to the 2020 Clem folks.

What is it called when a woman climbs in or out  the pictured hole in the ground on the decal?

I was reading that Berkley changed the name to remain gender neutral.

I could see a Clem in the family over the next year, such versatile machines

I'm sure currently enjoying my new to me Orange Sam, called SamWise Orangey and no Riv should dwell alone...Right?

If you don't know who Samwise Gamgee is...well, if your a Rivendell fan please look it up. It's essential knowledge.

Here's a photo of the 45 Clem L I bought for my wife, which just arrived last Friday. It joins the 52 Clem H I bought as a frame in the 2015 original Clem presale, so we are now an official two-Clem household!

Once it was out of the box and the wheels and handlebar were put on, I had to put on old pedals and grips and adjust the brakes, but as soon as that was done she took off and went for a quick spin around the neighborhood, in love with the looks, the brilliant bronze-green color, and the ride from that long wheelbase! (She also really appreciates the little details like the hearts in the lugwork and the multi-colored spoke nipples!)

The bike is still a work in progress, though -- I still have to transfer the front rack (with a basket handmade in Ghana that she bought at the New Amsterdam Bicycle Show), rear rack, and Brooks B67S saddle over from her old Gary Fisher, as well as buy some pedals that she can put her half clips on. Also, we're going to change out the Bosco handlebars, as they sometimes get in the way of her knees. I know a longer stem might fix that, but she's not crazy about the Boscos and prefers the Ahearne/Map bars that are on her other bike. But overall, Sylvia is a Rivendell convert, and she is out again on it today!

I’m so glad to hear of the pieces that bring her joy on her new bike. I like all those same things. What grips does she have on those bars? I like the look of them - like Ergons but a nicer color...

Well Leah, you should know that it was photos of your Clems from your IG that got her interested in them! Along with your superbly equipped green El Clem, Mark!

Regarding those grips: She doesn't remember the brand; she bought them at a bike shop in Dallas a long time ago when she lived there. They're worn, but still feel great.

On the other hand, I probably shouldn't admit in public that I have an entire book dedicated to manhole covers. (I'm not going to call them humankind covers.) I've taken photographs of a few myself over the years, including one here in town that I made into one of my note cards.

Oops. I included the NYC cover because it has a similar pattern to the Clem (and because Art Carney)  but also because I thought the caption was Rivendellish. Unfortunately you can't really read it. So here it is:

New York City. Pattern current in the catalogue of Campbell Foundry of Paterson, New Jersey. In New York City, where kids playing stickball used manhole covers to measure the distance they could bat a ball, scores were referred to as one-sewer or two sewer hits.

Yes, thanks for asking, my big, blue, non-binary Clem L bicycle recently arrived (albeit belatedly) at the back door. Fat-tired and swoopy with a bell and basket and so different from bikes I’m used to. I’d never ridden or even seen a Clem before. I bought because I wanted a Rivendell and it was the most the affordable model, complete and off-pavement capable. But I really wasn’t sure what to expect. In photos Clem’s appearance had reminded me of Bette Davis: beautiful in some angles/light and “whatever happened to baby jane” homely in others. Turns out it’s a good looking bike in person not ungainly at all. The blue (only color available) was almost a deal breaker until I read a description of the color by an owner on this group as, “blue-green-shot-through-with-glimmer-like-sunlight-on-seawater”, that comment turned the tide. It’s a lovely blue. And yes some companions have asked whether my new bike came in a men’s version but I ignore their benighted jibes - they have yet to climb up out of the manhole.

The ride is superb. I’ll admit to being a little worried that when I threw my leg over the saddle (yes I know I don’t have to now but old habits...) I would be riding a Clydesdale but that is decidedly not the case. First ride after assembling accidentally included a narrow downhill chicane, embankment on one side stone wall on the other, and the bike handled it at speed effortlessly - handling is responsive, smooth and confidence inspiring: shift weight and the bike readily follows. Off-road the front end lightly climbs over whatever and the stretched out rear absorbs the bumps. I did flat both tires on my maiden voyage as the unfamiliar trail turned out to be strewn with briars and nettles. There’s bound to be a learning curve off-road and I now know that Thunder Burts and thorns don’t mix. Oh and the upright relaxed riding position is a revelation. It took thirty seconds to realize Bosco bars are a game changer. I’ve never been so comfortable on a bike. I could meander all day. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Thanks for letting me share my delight.

Gill, thank YOU for sharing your delight. Incidentally, I’m the one who renamed the boring RBW Blue to “blue-green-shot-through-with-glimmer-like-sunlight-on-seawater”. If you like it, I’ll take the credit, and if you loathe it, I’ll accept the blame. That color is beautiful in all lighting, I think. Mine’s from 2019, but I’m assuming the 2020 is the same shade of blue.

I don’t even think of gender when I look at the Clems anymore. There have been so many men who ride them - all over the internet. My brother in law is a former college athlete, stands 6’2” and ordered the Clem L BECAUSE he wanted the step-through frame and no one makes one in his size...save Rivendell. Now he can stop ripping his expensive dress pants because no more will he swing a leg over a top tube.

Bosco bars: game-changers, I agree. There is no going back, you will be ruined for all else. The problem I have is that ALL our family’s bikes have them and loading several Bosco’ed bikes is not for the faint of heart. Sitting upright is so comfortable, and it will make you want to wander. Don’t let them tell you it’s “sit up and beg” - it’s the seated command position! 😜

You’ll love your new Clem, I think.

Top tubes...who needs ‘em?
Leah

Leah,I posted a couple of pics of this with some questions when it arrived last week.  But since you asked nicely :-) , here is the 45cm  Clem-L I got for my son's mom/former spouse.  Her last chemo transfusion kicked the stuffings out of her, so she's only had it out for one ride so far.  She DID enjoy it, though!  The easy on/off, upright position, and smooth and steady ride won her over immediately.  Her balance has been negatively impacted as well by treatments, so these were all especially welcome traits.  Her previous Bridgestone RB is a great bike, but not the one for where she is right now.  But Clem?  Clem is perfect, and ready to roll.  I just attached the bell I missed the other day when putting it together.  Shame on me!  What's next?  Maybe fenders, and almost certainly a rack and basket so that she can take a book and read in the park behind our house.  But mostly just enjoying it!

There isn’t a nicer gift you could have given her than this, and that’s the truth. I hope this bike facilitates her rehabilitation as her body fights and heals. You did a lovely job. ❤️

Mine showed up today. Haven't finished the setup. After these photos on the first ride, figured out how to attach the Pletscher sport rack. Also some other small things. And maybe keep adjusting the bars height and angle until I'm satisfied.

Different than the Hillborne with Wavie bars. Very upright. And very fun. Ride is definitely cushy. Even with the stock Kenda tires. Wondering what it would be like with 60's of some sort? Still trying to get used to not having to throw a leg over the old fashioned way. But instead train myself to step through. Also a nice change having a water bottle where it's easier to grab. So far, there's nothing I don't like. The paint details on this bike are really nice. Helps make it seem like a fancier, more hoity toity bike. Really looking forward to putting some miles in this one. Already scheming for the weekend.

Very nice; I like the simplicity of your build. I think I may have to investigate one of these one day.

Has anyone built up a Clem using lightish parts and wheels and with light RH tires? I know, I know, just ride, but still, the feel of an at least relatively light bike on light wheels with fast-rolling tires is very pleasant, and I see no reason in thought anyway not to complement (and even compliment) what I assume is the typical Rivendell feel of a Clem with nice wheels and tires.

Isn’t that exactly what I did here?

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/rbw-owners-bunch/N5w--nIDb0E/AFx-T485BwAJ

I broached the topic here: https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/Lighten$20up/rbw-owners-bunch/5DfZJEj-hqw

I don’t know how much weight I saved, but I spent a LOT of money getting the wheels/dyno/some new parts so I stopped there. It’s light enough - I can handle my bike just fine on Killer Hill in triple digit heat, so I’m sure a man (who will by his very nature be bigger and stronger than I) would have an even easier time of it.

Well, here are some pics, or it didn't happen.

You are right; I forgot that thread ("forgot" because I did read it). And you installed faster tires than the OEMs too, as I recall. How much one forgets in 3 months.

Or three days. I believe I mentioned above swapping out my 2.25" Thunder Burts for some Switchback ELs.

Ok watch me merge these threads. Let's see all your new heavy duty workhorse 2020 Clem(entine) bombers AND the superlights with parts that cost more than the whole original bike! 👍

Another oops. I colored outside the lines! It only now dawns on me that you were soliciting Clems from the latest batch, which of course makes sense. And there I go on about my old outdated 2019. But I didn't build it until well into 2020. And nobody had responded, so I suppose I can be credited with getting the ball rolling. I will pay more attention next time. Lots of nice new Clems out there!

I guess I am guilty of the same faux pas. My heavy duty build was not completed until well into 2020, but the frame is from the 2019 batch.
Apologies,
David

Clems built in 2020 totally count, Mark and David. I have a 2019 Clem, too, so I’m especially sympathetic. 😉 I mostly specified so we can see the latest iteration of Clem, but I think the 2019 model is nearly identical to the 2020.

Carry on!

After a couple of days hemming and hawing, decided to go back to the saddlebag rack I initially tried. Nothing wrong with the Pletscher, just wanted something different. So, this is pretty close to final. Unless I change up saddles again. Only differences from earlier are a Cygolite headlight on a Gino Mount, , Cygolite tail light, Brooks Cambium C17, mini reflective triangle, and Sackville hub shiner. Only bummer is the reflective triangle covers up the Rivendell flying man patch on the external pouch.

Still might add a bell. And down the line may swap out the trigger shifter to something else. Oh, and different tires. But that's for next year. No rush now. Want to just ride the bike. And enjoy.

This is such a wonderful thread because the bikes are beautiful and I can hear everyone's excitement.

Eric, my mini triangle covered up a light, so I just cut a hole in the mesh and now the light shines thru and I still have my triangle.  Perhaps your flying man is under the mesh part of the triangle?
