John G mentioned that he likes seeing Roadeos setup for brevets, inspiring this post.

There are not a lot of pictures of Roadeo setups available generally, so I wanted to share these photos to help anyone considering a Roadeo for just this purpose, which is why I bought mine.

At the time, I was considering a L'Avecaise. However, Jeff informed me that he was not taking international orders. This Roadeo frame soon popped up on this list.

This bike is lovely - it does everything I want a road bike to do, but with Rivendell level of comfort. It has been an almost daily rider for a few years, and done a couple of 200k brevets.

Nice, Paul. You said "international orders;" where are you?

I like the "make do" build, particularly the twined brake lever bodies. Are those EX brake levers? I'll have to remember that for my pair, without hoods, and hoods impossible to come by. Also for the 7410 levers, once my (expensive!) stash of extra hoods is used up. I take it -- if you ride that bike on brevets -- that the twine does not chafe the web between forefinger and thumb?

And kudos on the tail light wire, from someone who is far too obsessive about such things.

Thanks Patrick!

I'm in Singapore.

The brake levers are Riv's long standing favourite Shimano Tiagras (they went by another name when I bought them). The hoods wore off a long time ago and I could never find replacements. I don't know if it happens in temperate climates, but in warm and humid climates, the rubber tends to melt.

I used a file to smoothen the sharp metal edges before wrapping them in twine. The twine is comfortable on long rides with gloves, I think there would be chaffing without.

Saddlebag is a Carradice zipped roll bag. I have a Sackville banana sack on the way.

Paul, I can't imagine running a brevet in Singapore. The routes must be mostly, if not entirely international, with Singapore being so small and well-connected internally (hard to find a route that doesn't have multiple alternative connecting the same waypoints). And the heat. Oh my!

Nice bike Paul. I built a wheelset from Velocity rims and those Shimano 105 hubs and have been very happy with them.

Its true! 97% of the brevet routes are ridden in Malaysia. Yes, its very hot.

One interesting fact is that a lot of the riding is done on expressways.

Nice pics Paul. Not vastly different from my Roadeo's setup. We finally have light winds, no rain, and warmer temps here in Maryland that I could get out. Taking a brake over a babbling brook this morning.

Great bike, great color.  I never pass up a chance to post a picture of my Roadeo - in same colors! Not set up for brevets, but pretty well travelled:

In response to an off-list query, the seat bag is a Brooks Isle of Wight.

And here’s mine, with fenders covering 28mm tires. It’s the bike I ride the most: fast, comfortable, and reassuring.

Here's mine, but without the rear Saddlesack Medium attached. I had taken it off for this particular ride.

Lovely! The setup almost exactly panders to my own prejudices.

What bar -- make and model, width? And what is the stem -- make and model, and reach?

Pro 5 Vis double? What teeth on the rings?

What are those pedals?

Iris cage: I approve.

Curious: Why SKS fenders instead of Honjos or discount but still very nice Velo Oranges? Aluminum fenders IME are lighter, less flexible, give more coverage, look better, and resist damage sufficiently to make it worthwhile to consider them. Your Roadeo would truly shine with even the relatively thrifty VO aluminum fenders.

I say this as someone who has used umpteen sets of SKS and PB and Bluemels and Avocet plastic fenders, as well as many Honjos, VOs, and Berthouds -- and Kelpies!

That said, for fenders that resist abuse and damage, regardless of coverage or aesthetics or sun warping, SKS's and PBs rule the roost.

The bar is a 44cm Nitto 177 Noodle on an 8cm Nitto Technomic Deluxe.

Crank set is a 46x30 Velo Orange Grand Cru 175mm.

Pedals are Shimano 105 5700 era.

I originally had SKS Longboards on but the front one broke so I replaced the front with a Chromoplastics version of the P45 with a PB mudflap attached to it that I had lying around. I chose SKS due to the ease of installation, they allow me to fit Jack Browns, and I can put the bike in my car (front wheel on) without ruining the front fender. I do agree that the metal fenders mentioned have better coverage and look classier...and if anybody has safely fit Jack Browns under them on their Roadeo, I'd be interested in your installation tips and tweaks.

Max,
That's a classy looking Roadeo, and the jersey is excellent.

Some nice looking bikes on this thread! The White/Blue like John's seems to be a rarity--but it's such a nice combination.

@Paul G: I'm also running the 46x30 VO crankset. I love that 46x30 gearing! It's currently paired with a lightweight Ultegra 11-28 cassette but I also have an 11-34 if I expect to do some significant climbing.

Also, do I see 15mm of spacers on that headset? Did you replace the fork or did it come from RBW like that? Mine only has 10mm of spacers.

Unfortunately, I can't help with fendering the Roadeo. I only put fenders on my Black Mountain Monstercross which has loads of clearance over my 38 Barlow Pass's.

Austin, when my frameset arrived from Waterford to Rivendell, the fork steerer was cut to length after Mark at Rivendell called me and asked how tall the stack of spacers ought to be. I sensed there was latitude depending on my desired bar height and future height potential. I decided to use the same height as the test Roadeo I had ridden prior to ordering.

I forgot to mention that there are 20mm of spacers total.

Just a side note / PSA for forks with steerers threaded down low — which prob does not to be said for this group, but still — just make sure the quill stem expander bolt sits fully below where the threads begin on the steerer, regardless of whether the “maximum height” marker gets buried below the top locknut on the headset.

Very interesting to know that Jack Brown's will fit under SKS P45s!

My Compass 32mm Stampede Pass tires seem tight under my SKS P45s (albeit they are 13 years old, dimensions may have been updated since)

Nonetheless I have been wanting to buy a pair of JBs for fenderless days and am now inclined to try the combination. Thanks for posting that!

I should say that one person's opinion of what constitutes acceptable safe fender clearance may differ from another. In any case, fitting Jack Browns under the SKS P45s on my Roadeo takes careful installation to max out the available clearance. It is a tight fit. Perhaps tighter than some may be comfortable with. Nevertheless, Rivendell marketed the Roadeo as being able to do so and sold them like that. And I have never had any issues with my installation other than an occasional leaf getting caught and making a racket against the spinning tire. I am careful about running over sticks, etc. as any rider with fenders ought to be.
