Advice on a bike trade

Would you trade your mint 2000 Toyota Atlantis 26” for a Bridgestone Xo-1 in the same condition?
Please elaborate.

I’d keep the Atlantis. 

Mounts on the fork, better paint, and it’s Grant’s take on a better version of the XO-1.

I'll be interested to see what others say. 

I still have a 93 X0-1 but I have other bikes too. I do love the 93 X0-1; it's an iconic bike. But honestly, I think the 2000 Toyo Atlantis is a better-made , more versatile bike as Nikko points out. They're not interchangeable and if you're doing any touring , the Atlantis is a hands-down winner

Does the rarity effect your choice though? I feel like mint Xo-1 is impossible to get now.

Do you want an iconic bike? A touring bike? A Rivendell? An all rounder?

I’d pick the Atlantis. XO-1s are cool for what they were, but the idea has evolved into something better, IMO.

You are correct, if you really want a perfect XO-1 that's not going to happen too many more times, we're 29-30 years out from them now. You can always find another Riv if you want one later, grab that XO.

Value is another story. I'd be looking for some cash in the trade if I had a Toyo Atlantis, that's a handbuilt Japanese frame 🙌

I think it also depends on the XO1. The canti orange ones should be worth more… at least to me.

My first recommendation was based on my sense of what the OP wants. For myself I have to agree with you, I've gone through a few XO-1s (and a couple -3s) and I wouldn't trade any Riv for one, not even a Clem. They're just better bikes from when the XO designer didn't have to make a corporation happy anymore. 

Btw I'd ask about a repaiint on this one. Phone photos are impossible for confirming color but that looks like new paint in a deeper orange to me. But I could be wrong.

it's not box-stock....saddle, stem, no pedals, wheels don't look stock...fair enough. but original spec was aimed at a price point. And speaking of which...originally my X0-1 was priced at 1750.00 CDN which I thought, cool as the bike was, was a bit spendy because the components are decent but nothing outstanding...and the seller discounted the price by about 350.00 or so. That to me was more reasonable so I bought it and I was happy with it. But mine is no longer completely stock. Actually, the original paint job has held up surprisingly well for an almost 30-year old bike

Nope.

The slope of resistance to to really letting yourself ride and enjoy an XO-1 as Grant designed and intended is steep. Considering this trade communicates that you objectify the XO-1, as many do. I had a '93 XO-2 (the purple Dirt Drop bar one) and found it a pioneering design idea but easily outdone by my 2002 Rambouillet, also by Toyo. The focus Rivendell allowed Grant to give the Atlantis and Rambouillet exceeded what could be done in the Bridgestone business model considering the production nature of those bikes, even the rare halo models (had a '91 MB-0 too). 

Good conversation a while back either here or on iBOB about production lugged construction (realtive to the MB-series) with input from Mark B. about the copper brazing head tube and lugs made as a component for the main triangle build was a good example how the finished frame looks like a hand built item but incorporates definitely mass production process.

I prefer my bikes dusty from miles on unpaved roads, not storing them. Keep and ride the Atlantis.

If I had the extra cash to get an XO-1 in fantastic shape that I could use as a display piece in the house only I would do so. Getting one for riding in comparison to a Riv? I would take the Riv every single time.
