Friends,

I have one bike to ride. It’s a Clementine with mostly stock parts, and it’s heavy.

I love it.

I have been riding nearly every day and I’ve got 997.9 miles on it for 2020! The hills here are brutal, and the temps are approaching triple digits. So, I want to ride at night, and I want to get up the hills more easily. James and Candice at Analog Cycles in Vermont have showcased their beautiful work on Instagram, and I’ve long been an admirer. #RivSister Roberta knows them and had planned to have them do similar work on her Appaloosa (I’m sure she’ll delight us with her story here when the time comes), and because we girls tend to stick together, I got in touch with Analog. Dyno lighting and lighter wheels with tubeless tires were what was decided.

So, here’s one photo from Analog that can’t do these wheels one whit of justice; the wheels arrived today and they are showstoppers in real life. I am going to follow up right after this post with a video (2nd post necessary for video to work, I don’t know why) that you can access if you choose to download it. The video is the only way to really capture any of the beauty in these wheels. I told them to go wild with color, and they did. I think the bold colors and patterns capture the zany nature of a Clem.

Don’t ask me what all the details are, who KNOWS, this is me you’re talking to. I do know I got tubeless Gravel Kings (Evan Elliot, I think these were your suggestion months ago), something about machined sidewalls, Shutter Precision/Edelux II, Son rear light. Oh, enough, what really matters here is there are COLORED SPOKE NIPPLES AND VALVE STEMS. And guess what they do? They fade into other colors because Analog is a straight-up master of color. These wheels are a lot, which is saying something for a woman whose favorite color is sparkle. I LOVE them. More is more. Too much is enough. And so on...

Tomorrow, I’m taking my bike in for a list of stuff I’m having done to it, and I really hope the mechanics know how to set up dyno lighting - I’ve been burned by Vegas bike shops before, and this is a new shop for me. See the Wiggly Fender thread. 🙄

More later when everything is on the bike and I have gotten to ride it.

Thanks for looking, this is made even more fun in the presence of like minds.
Leah

Welcome to the rabbit hole of bike nerdery.  I suspected a developing case when you gave up the Best Bicycle in the Whole World (did I get that right?) for the Clementine.

Doug,

Well. You’re not wrong. But you know what else? I blame all of you. I used to be a perfectly reasonable person (with a disconcerting affinity for sparkle), but now look at how things have gotten. I was tickled to swap my Walmart Special for a Betty Foy and I was happy for so many years. But then I started haunting this place and hearing about long chainstays and higher bars and fancy wheels and now I have Rainbow Brite wheels that cost more than my bike.

I regret nothing. Those wheels are so 🤩.

But, mark my words, after this bike and the mixte (which I’m still hoping isn’t a ‘Pus) I’m swearing off improvements. I’m going to ride and be satisfied and immune to all the bike charms. For at least 10 years...

Hold me to this,
Leah

It's all impossibly cool and rad and other words denoting coolness and radness I can't think of right now. Check out the spoke nipples, they look like the stages of a sunset!

I can't wait to see this built up and in a hundred pics and videos on Instagram. Bring it!

Leah, you have gone and done it now.....the colors are brilliant and I can hardly wait to hear how your Clem rides with these new wheels.  I don't want to be envious, but I will be anyway. What a beautiful pair of new "shoes" sporting all the colors of the rainbow much like your sandals.  Your bike is going to stand out with those bright hubs and the light housing.  Of course, you had to carry the color theme through with your accessorizing (repair kit and other stuff).  Pure wonderfulness! Congratulations!

Leah, You're going to love riding at night, making your own light and never having to remember checking batteries or charging things. I nearly enjoy the cold months here for the dark of my rides to and from work because of that. From now until September it's light (or twilight) on the commute.

Our friend who has lived with us since the pandemic to finish nursing school via Zoom was instantly transformed by her first ride out in the night with lights and has a Riv with generator lights in her middle term objectives.

But the perhaps applicable saying that I recall is "... too much is not enough", sometimes preceded by "wretched excess, ..."

On a different note, I hope you weighed those wheels (and the lights etc) before you took everything to the shop. We're gonna want to know exactly how many grams (or ounces) you've shaved off your ride. Similarly we (or perhaps just I) want to know how many teeth your small chain ring and largest cog have before and after.

(I sent this early this morning, 5.21, but it went as a PM to someone. Sorry. Here it is.)

Shoji - I want to believe the mindset of leaving well enough alone is possible, but I think it will be a fight! Has anyone dialed in a bike and then left it alone from that day forward? Chime in here.

Joe - silver Rich-built wheels are always a thing of beauty. You’re not riding a goofy Clem, you chose wisely.

Joyce - Oh, how I want these for you and your Clementine! I have been thinking about you lately, wondering how it’s going with your hip. My left knee bothers me (no diagnosis yet since I was going to make an appt at the time COVID hit), and it’s made worse when I push really hard on hills. I’m hoping these wheels take some of the strain out, though the challenge has been good for my quads.

Andy - am I reading it right that this girl has a Riv on her post-grad agenda? Which one will she get? Yes, I’m so tired of having my light taking up space on my bars (I’ve got way too much stuff on them but have declared all of it essential), and wondering if it’s low and needs charging. I have no way of knowing when the battery is low, but it does flicker when the end is near, which always stresses me out. Enough of that, welcome, dyno.

Thanks, Rusty! I love the look! I am going to ask Analog to make the wheels for my mixte, too, just have to decide what look we’re going for. I should probably choose something sleek and classy, but it’s pretty hard not to choose all the color.

George - ha! You’re right.

Brian - thanks. I’ll show the mechanics if they seem at all uncertain.

Today’s the day I drop off the bike. The area in which I live has slim pickings for bike shops. My favorite closed its doors without warning several months back. REI installed my fenders wrong and caused damage to a bike I hired them to pack, plus they’re closed due to COVID. One remaining shop has a 2 week wait before they can take you. I called 2 shops deeper into the City and both were swamped as well. The first took my name and put me on a wait list. He said he cannot fit one more bike in his shop and that after he takes the bike, it will be another 2 week wait. I left my name a week ago, and I’m still on the wait list. I called yet another and they told me they stopped taking bikes and closed shop for 2 business days just to catch up on the work they already had. He told me to come by when my wheels arrive, but I don’t know how long his line is. I’ll find out today.

I have the cast-off 52 cm Clem H in the garage, so I won’t be totally Riv-less, but it will be an adjustment for me. I rode it awhile back and thought, “WHY are these bars so far away from me?!” The bike has Bosco Bullmoose bars. 🤣

Ted, I’m sorry but I’m such a disappointment. In true form, with my aversion to my scale (I’m never in agreement with that thing) I weighed *nothing* but just tossed those wheels in the van and drove off to get them installed. Which brings me to the story portion of my post...

Henderson and Las Vegas are woefully short of good bike shops. The two largest are a LONG drive from me, and they concentrate on roadies or mountain biker types but certainly not the Leah Petersons of the world. The only shop that ever knew what a Rivendell was has closed its doors so I’m back to folks thinking “What a nice cruiser.”

The shops that remain are booked solid. They can’t get parts. They can’t take anymore bikes. Today I pointed the van NW and drove to Southwest Bikes. I arrived 20 min before opening, and there was already a line in the parking lot. I was #3 in line. I heard the mechanic say to the guy in front of me, “We aren’t taking any new repairs.”

Um. I called last week and they had said to bring my bike in when I got my wheels. After turning the guy in front of me away, it was my turn. “Did I hear you say you aren’t taking new repairs?” I asked.

“Yeah, only simple things like flats.”

“Well, I need these wheels and dyno put on my bike, and I had some other things on the list...”

“I took your call last week - I remember. I’m sorry; can you come back May 28th and we’ll take the bike then?”

It’s not his fault; these are unprecedented times and frankly, I’m happy that the bike industry is getting a cash infusion. So, I smiled, thanked him and left without agreeing to come back.

I loaded the Clementine back onto the rack and started making phone calls. One shop said bikes would be worked on June 7-8th. Last week I was waitlisted at a promising shop so I called them to see where my name was at, and they had 5-6 pages of names on their waitlist! They figured it would be Sunday before they would call me and even then I’d have to leave the bike for a couple of weeks. There was one large shop that I’d avoided because they are named Pro Cyclery and I just knew I’d be the laughingstock of their store if I pulled up with my Clementine. I looked at my James-built Rainbow Brite wheels in the back seat.

I called Pro Cyclery.

“Hi, yes, we have a wait, maybe a week and a half - maybe June 2nd, but we’re not as bad as a lot of other shops.”

I bit back tears and pointed the van south.

I had pulled myself together when I arrived Pro Cyclery. I looked at the woman in her padded bike shorts wheeling and dealing with an employee and shuddered. The people here are not going to understand about my Rivendell. I stood in line and listened to another employee explain to a mother-son duo that he was so sorry, he could not get parts. Parts are sold out everywhere, all over town and even overseas. I said a silent prayer of thanks that I had brought all my own parts. (How did James and Candice get them?!) I was waited on by a guy who seemed confused about my dyno. “I don’t see how we’re going to hide that wire,” he said. “You’re not,” I said, “It’s going to wrap around the fork. Say, um do you guys do dyno? I have a website if it’s confusing...” I gave him a list of wants for repairs. It was a lot. He was a bit withered after we got through it all. He said some of this was above his expertise level but “Jaime” had a lot of experience and would know. “We’ll call you and give you an estimate for the work soon. But there will be a wait for it to be complete.” I assured him it was fine and I left.

I drove away, Clem-less, and felt unsettled. Thirty minutes later the phone rang and the shop wanted to give me my estimate for the repair work. “And let me say,” he said, “All three of us are STOKED to work on your bike. We never see bikes like this come in here. Someone took a lot of care building this bike; we are really excited to work on it.”

Well, I went from the lowest of lows to a HIGH. My bike is going to get done.  I think it will be done right. And I would venture to guess they will get it done sooner than promised. I can hardly wait!!!!!!!!

Aye, I find it surprising who recognizes quality and who does not. Glad you found a spot that, at the very least, appreciates they are working on quality. Hopefully that helps them rise to that level if they aren't already there. Grin.

Leah, you'd asked: "Has anyone dialed in a bike and then left it alone from that day forward? Chime in here." Chiming in. I've gone with the same basic setup for a number of years on a couple of bikes (Quickbeam and Hunqapillar). My advantage is I break things, being an ogre, so have to replace things and use that as a natural time to assess and try new bits. So, my answer is Yes, er, no, er, maybe, with a lot of caveats. Grin.

With abandon,

Good luck with that;  2030 is a long, long way off.

After doing my due diligence on touring bikes, I bought an Atlantis in '03, and Rivendell build it up with their recommended parts.  They quizzed me about what I planned to with the bike, then suggested suitable components.  When it arrived, after riding it, my reaction was "it's perfect, I don't have to change a thing, just ride it."  Well, that lasted about a month.  Over the last 17 years, I've lost count of how many "versions" the bike has been thru.  Various racks, bags, cassettes, handlebars, stems, shifters, etc.  As I think about it, the only original parts are the seat post, crankset, and the hubs which were used on the second wheelset, built in 2009.  Often I've thought "now it's perfect", but changing needs call for changes.

Now, I've done anything like your wheelset but you'll find other little fiddly bits that can be improved.  Hey, it's only money & everyone needs a hobby.

Hearing about your struggle to find a good shop and knowing how retail bike shops everywhere, including those here in the East SF Bay Area give me an uncomfortable sense of dissonance. It is true that the shelter-in-place order has stretched out the timeline for repairs, but shops that survived are super stoked to work on all bikes.

If it were just installing those new wheels and the dyno, it really shouldn't take the mechanics too long (my estimate would be less than 30 minutes), but perhaps you have other repairs lined up.

A tale as colorful as your new wheels. Right now looking toward a dandy ending. I think I would categorize the work as wheel swap and accessory additions, since things aren't actually broke, just heavy;^) Those are some snazzy looking hoops, and I like that they went with the warm colors to contrast with the cool blue of your CLemly. ( A Clemly is a Clem L owned by a gal, whereas a guys Clem L is an El Clem.  Remember, Clemliness is next to godliness. But you know all this.)

Leah asked, Has anyone dialed in a bike and then left it alone from that day forward? Chime in here.

All the time. Although most of the time I don't even quite bother fully turning the dial to....dialed. Case in point, my Takara, which got a lovely bright green tape job which I kinda told myself I would T&S. Then I did a muddy little event called The Farmer's Daughter (name of a quasi local craft beer) that imparted a nice "tea-stain" patina... and there you go. Dial stuck at not quite dialed. I end up getting used to a stem 1cm short or a bar a little wide or brake levers not exactly where they were on the last bike. Sacrilege to some, but I look at it as I am the software, easier to change that (within reason, of course.,)

Apropos of color, not sure if I ever posted this here, but, it kinda goes anyway.Put it together after having done a couple of monochromatic builds. Photos taken before fenders were installed, and I sold it to a friend when my El Clem arrived in town. Riv content: The fabulous grips, the saddle, the derailleur. I can't recall if the bars are Albatross or something similar. It was my Chevynot. More Riv content: My friend rides it every day with his daughter, who is about 7, and happens to be named Clementine. Right now she prefers Clem or Clemmy. Heck of a rider.

Leah, congratulations on the new wheels; they are colorful!
Looks like some of the wheels I've built.
What rear hub is that? Looks a bit like a Hope!? I have a couple of those & I like'm pretty good, although I find them to be a little "tight" initially. They loosen up over the first hundred or so miles and then just get better & better. The centerlock had me scratching my head a little bit!?

Also, are these going on your Clem? I ask, because I know your Clem is blue & the wheels seem primarily red & orange? And I think you said Clementine a couple times? Force of habit I guess? The hub color I can tell you from experience is sort of catch as catch can, once you get out of Black & silver. Red is typically the next most common. I have some blue ones, but for whatever reason blues tend to be 36 hole.
Dynamo stuff IS hard to get right now. I had a shop credit my order, because they couldn't get the stuff out of Germany.

You know, one thing I like about a dynamo rear light is it's a constant light as opposed to a blinking light. From my experience blinking lights are drunk magnets! With a steady bright light you are visible, without being distracting.

I feel your frustration with the bike shops right now; too bad there's not a way to let shops know that your bike should get priority because you didn't just pull it out of the back of the garage and that it really gets ridden as opposed to the majority of the stuff clogging up the shops now. Although it sounds as though your shop quickly sussed out that your bike wasn't run of the mill. They are probably drawing straws to see who gets to work on your bike & who has to change flats on the Dept. Store bikes!
Between the components and the new tires, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the difference.

Hope you are reunited with the bike soon!

To be honest, this WFH period combined with a string of cold / rainy days and weeks devastated my bike-budget. Not because the bikes aren't "dialed in", but because this is basically my knitting. My better half knits with yarn and needles, I knit with bike frames and parts. It calms the nerves better than alcohol (e.g. without the drowsiness), and thus doubles as psychotherapy.

- Max "gluing tubulars is my form of acid trip" in A2

PS: I hear that in knitting circles, there's an acronym – SABLE (go look it up) – there is sometimes an equivalent side-effect of endless bike-tinkering. Good to know bike-nuts aren't the only ones with this problem...

Mas, I believe (pretty sure) her rear hub is a Bitex like this, James at Analog is big on them. The center-lock is useless on this bike but the hub works.

The rear hub is Bitex, as Joe said. These are going on my Clem, which I now call Clementine again because it’s just too confusing to say Clem L. Yes, the bike is blue. Yes, the accents are reds and oranges, and they are smashing.

It was amazing to see how many bikes were lined up for service. Really good to see people with their bikes. It’s hard to be mad that there’s a line because I do want bike businesses to do well, man, have they needed it. I wish my shuttered LBS could have survived to see the COVID times because it would maybe have breathed life back into their bank account.

I hope all those shop guys test ride my bike and finally get a taste of the good life.

Aww!
People stoked to work on your bike are the people you want working on your bike.

It occurs to me that if you could contact your shuttered shop owner, he or she may be back in business, under the table.

My favorite part of the Pro Cyclery story is "I don't think we can hide the (dyno) wire." At first I heard it as "we don't do dynohubs"..later I realized they work on internal-routed-cable bikes all the time and were trying to figure out how to get that sucker in the fork. I like that crew!

The Bitex do look like good hubs; amazingly I was not familiar with them.

Mas: Me neither 'til James started putting them on builds. I still don't know diddly about the company, but they sure are pretty!

Leah- Our friend objectifies Rivendell and intends to own one. Which model is unclear. She reads my Bicycle Quarterly magazines, loves the post war French women riders and the YouTube videos from Rivendell. She's not an assertive, "hard woman" sort of rider but rather a gentle cyclist of above average stamina and fortitude. She did not waiver when I took her out on the early rides to learn cycling in the city and how to get around by bike. I asked her to "follow the path of my wheel as closely as you can and signal like I do". She rides in such straight lines that people presume she's a very experienced cyclist. She's biked to camp on Sub 24 hour overnights, commutes, grocery shops and enjoys just getting out and exploring on her bike. She's in the camp of generator hubs and fixed lights for your same reasons. Her influences and interests don't point to a particular model but she's graduated nursing school, awaits authorization to test when it resumes, and has decided to remain here where she's worked through school and is known. I'll help when her choice nears. Bicycling has become very dear to her over these last few years. It's been her transportation, independence, entertainment and source of esteem since people gravitate to her when she's out riding in the city, asking questions about bikes, places to ride, directions. To them she's a boss. An approachable one, with good taste!

Today is Day One with no Clementine. We have the neglected Big Blue, the Clem in the back of the garage that I have resurrected for such a time as this. It’s a different beast entirely; it reminds me of riding my best friend’s giant quarter horse when we were girls.

I can stand over it fine but swinging a leg over is not my forte. I miss my step-through. But, the bike is sparkling clean and I’ve managed to get enough color on it to make it tolerable. It’s being saved for when my teenager grows into it, but he’s a fan of monochromatic looks, so this bike will be made over when he takes ownership. (Pictured: my monochromatic son and his monochromatic Clem. The photo is a year old; he’s much bigger now, but I adore him in this photo.)

Andy, this woman who’s living with you (she needs a name, it’s too much to type), why isn’t she on the List? This the best place for Riv lovers, I think. Plus, she could have some #RivSisters.

Interesting she’s been doing S24Os - is that what the cool kids in college are doing now? Is it just a bunch of friends or a group from campus? Interesting!

When I graduated from nursing school sign-on bonuses were all the rage. Maybe when this woman passes her NCLEX she will net herself a healthy sign-on bonus from her employer and plunk down the money for her first Rivendell. It’s absolutely what I would do if I had lived in a bike-friendly city when I started out as a nurse. It looks like she has a mixte/step through already - those are hard to give up. There’s a fresh batch of Clementines arriving at Rivendell this summer, and they come in that gorgeous RBW blue (I have it, I love it)...today at high noon Pacific time.
