Great one, Damon! I love the line, 'Their pace is easy. No one's out to break speed or distance records...so they can afford to stop as often as they please. Perhaps to look at a view. Perhaps to make a mug of tea, or perhaps to make a full meal.'  (Or in Big Jim's case, a wee dram!) These gents have it figured out.

Thanks to John and [name?]* for posting those video links. I found the “Mechanical Tramp” one more interesting.

I was interested to see the use of cycling capes for long distance touring; recall someone years ago scoffing at capes as too unaerodynamic for “serious” riding.

And no ramen noodles! Bacon rashers and home made bread and jam!

Does anyone know if Bill talks Scots or just English with a [southern] Scottish accent? I expect it’s the latter. (Apparently Scotland’s three languages, apart from mere pommy English, are Scottish English, Scots, and Scottish Gaelic.

Interesting to me because for years I read Dorothy Sayers’ Peter Wimsey detective novels and a favorite was The Five Red Herrings set in an artists’ community in Galloway. One reason this was a favorite is that bicycles are all over the place in the setting and in the plot, and toward the end there are pages and pages describing LPW’s blow-by-blow econstruction of the murder including a desperate and lengthy bike ride across the hills to (just) catch a train south and establish an alibi.

And, I have, somewhere in my ethnic baggage, Scots Irish ancestors, Presbyterian lowland Scots brought in to man the Northern Irish plantations that the English/Norman aristocrats stole from the native Irish nobility.

Yes, capes probably aren't very aero or fashionable, but Bill and his mate don't seem like the kind of guys too concerned with such things. I guess it all depends upon one's definition of 'serious riding'.

I retract my preference for the “Mechanical Tramp” video. I went back and actually watched the one John posted; nope, just as good. Less to do with cycling but interesting for what I assumed when I watched it for the remnants of a traditional way of life.

22 miles cross-country across the hills on a 6-bob single speed, 3 pints (and real British pints, 19 fl oz, the proper minimum amount if beer for an active and healthy grown man; none of your lame 12 ounces) and 19 fl oz more of whisky — then to have to turn around and ride the same route back home: that is a story worth telling.

I liked Damon's video a lot; email address does indicate his name BTW. I do agree with Patrick that it is Scottish English.  When I went to Scotland in '79 I stayed in Galashiels on the border with 2nd cousins on my mother's side and they spoke Scots English (Descended from Middle English - northern dialect)...and I didn't hear much use of Scots dialect when he spoke; maybe he actually speaks it as a vernacular and using standard Scottish English for this interview. It is intelligible...but takes a few pints of the local brew to get used to. When I returned from 2 months of travels with my aunt I picked up a slight accent after spending a month in Edinburgh with one 2nd cousin and his girlfriend(from Barra in the Orkneys and speaks Gaelic at home; Scottish English in Edinburgh with us)  and 7 other flatmates. Who were a lot more fun to hang out with (being in their mid-twenties like me) than my aunt's generation of relatives, if I'm being honest. 

Also took me a while to reaccustom myself to wtching for traffic on the right side of the road

Both videos really make me wanna get out and ride in equal measure. Jim's caching of supplies is quite inspiring. I might have to try it, but maybe with a can of baked beans since I'm teetotal.
