I was going to buy a Sugino XD 600 but they are about the same price. I figure the Grand Cru is made in Taiwan but am not sure, the Sugino probably is as well.

Any experience or options? I have never dealt with Velo Orange but their reputation seems to be good.

Thanks

Joel

Hi Joel, I have the 110 triple in 165mm on my Soma San Marcos and like it very much. I think the design is lovely, and it installed easily. I'm about 5'6" and had 175's on the original build as delivered, which was very uncomfortable. I sold those on eBay and got the right size and it made a big difference for me.

I have V-O cranks on several bikes. No problems at all.

Not up to TA standards, but very nice and reasonably priced.

Thanks Ray. I lost a couple of inches after back surgery but was already using the 165's and really liked them better than the 170 or 175's I had used earlier, thanks for the feedback

Thanks Eric, I have the TA Zephyr on my Bleriot and since I am undecided whether I will keep it or not figured I should just build the new Atlantis frame (it's on the way) up with a different crank, the only parts I do not have are a crank and handlebars. So I am out shopping now.

The TA is the nicest crank I have ever had, I sold one on my Custom when I sold the bike, almost a 100%^ complete bike sale. Fred did not want the Albatross bars but I think he ended up putting them on later. This crank does look nice and the XD 600 seems to be in short supply in 165, and Sugino's web page is really terrible as far as knowing what is available.

I have sent a message to Riv to find out about the BB they have installed on the Atlantis frame. I hope it is a match.

Depends if you want additional ankle clearance on your crank. The Sugino XD arms flare out, whereas I don't think the VO arms do.

I have a VO Drillium crank, a VO Gran Cru 50.4 BCD crank with VO single chainring and a Sun XCD crank with the same VO single chainring. My only complaint is that the chainrings are only polished on one side, the backside of the chainrings are not polished at all - kind of a very fine pebbly sandcast looking finish. The backside of the crank is not polished either, but more of a shiny machined finish than the chainrings (the Sun XCD is a thing of beauty, however). You can see this in the pictures on the VO website if you look. I spend way too much time looking at bicycle parts...

No complaints with the function.

Joel

I looked at the VO website.  The triple seems to use a tripleralizer design for the inner ring.  You need a special middle ring having the extension and holes for the inner ring, sinc ethe crank has no casting for the inner ring nuts.  Something to consider.

John, I ordered that and the Sugino.  The Sugino is MIJ, the Velo is MIT.  The Velo triple feels hollow, I am waiting for the Sugino to come to do a side by side.  I am leaning heavily to the Sugino as I have had good luck with them in the past.

Thanks for your thought, hope all is well.

I believe VO uses the same mold as the IRD Defiant cranks:

I'm pretty sure the VO crankset is not "hollow." I like the look of the VO/Defiant, which is based on vintage Sugino Mighty Tour which is based on old Campy cranks. Another plus is no hidden chainring bolt as found on the XD 600. I've had the VO 50.4 crank on a bike for a number of years, have used the Defiant on bikes as well, no issues. I would not base any decision on which country the part was made in when the two choices are Japan and Taiwan.

I guess in theory the tripleralizer design might be more problematic, if at some point in the future you found you needed to replace the middle ring and IRD was out of business. They currently sell a replacement ring.

Mark & Joel

VO also sells a replacement 34T ring with the triplerazier tabs for $50

If using the VO or Defiant, it may be wise to buy 1 or 2 spare 36T rings.  VO has a 20% off sale from time to time.

The Sun XCD is indeed beautiful......   I had to search to find it.
