Honest opinions needed please; selling my Platypus and wanted to get a crowdsourced take on a reasonable value?

Reason is that we're returning to the UK at the end of the year and although we'll be at a fabulous location for cycling (Isle pf Skye) it's mostly trails, bike-packing and MTB type of stuff. Although dearly loved, the Platypus just won't see any use up there.

50cm, 650B, lots of goodies, Velocity wheelset, dynamo lights, basket & bag included.

I built one up for my wife in late 2022, and kept track of everything I spent.
Pretty much the same:  50cm, 650B, lots of goodies, Velocity wheelset, dynamo lights, basket.
Ours is a 3x9.  Total cost to build up with all new parts: $3769.92.  So there is one data point.

Assuming the old “rule” that you get half of new price for a used bike, say - $1900.
My wife wouldn’t sell hers for that, though.  Honest opinion - $2300.

Considering the “supply and demand” of Riv Bikes right now, IMHO, if advertised on the Riv sale page on FB, ask $2300-$2500 for it. There’s probably not one Platypus available at any US dealer now. And they are the “most Riv” bike out there. It’ll sell in moments! I don’t see bikes listed for long on that site. They all sell. Are you SURE you won’t kick yourself later for selling???

GLWS! It’s a beautiful piece!

Plan B, if you can wait, would be to see what they are going for in October, when the tariffs kick in.
Even if Rivendell can somehow hold the line on frame prices, the hardware will be going up, too.

Plan C, if you can take it with you, would be to sell it to someone in the Costwolds for £3000.
Check with Blue Lug to see what they would sell a Platypus for shipped to Great Britain.

Plan C:   Take the bike with you to the UK. Drop the fenders and mount up some big knobbies. Ride it on the trails - .it's off pavement performance  just might surprise you. If it doesn't, then sell or trade it.

FWIW, I've been discovering my Platypus to be nicely capable for non-technical mountain trails and gravel roads.

Not everyone (like me) has the skills to build up a bike, so a complete bike might be perfectly acceptable and perhaps preferred by some. Mine is similar (plus more goodies ….), and cost me somewhere between 4500 and 4900 complete at Analog Cycles five years ago.  These bikes are is short supply.   People want these bikes.  If I were to sell mine, it would be more than what the others are suggesting, especially if yours is in great shape.

I bought two pre-loved Rivs and sold one Riv, and for all transactions I was able to meet the seller/buyer, have me or them test ride the bike and make sure buyer loves it.  As a newbie to Riv at that time, this was a huge value and no buyers needed to pay freight costs. All transactions happened at the original asking price.

Also, I second what Steve said. I like my Platy on road surfaces but I came to love it more on small gravel and slight off road.

Good luck with your move and if you sell the bike, there will be one lucky new rider.
